so after thinking about this long and hard i've decided that i needed to quit my day job to purse my nursing full time. clinicals will be during the weekday the same as my work hours so i will have to leave my job anyway. on top of that i'm so glad that i'll have the chance to focus primarily on school than work.
so my question is : how do i write my letter ? i'm really close with my boss but i know i still must have everything in writing. please help. thanks.

Well, first (and I hope I don't sound patronizing, because I don't mean to), even though you're "really close" with your boss, write your resignation as a formal business letter, not a personal note to your boss.
You simply have to state that you're resigning your position effective such-and-such date (however much notice you're giving them). Maybe it's silly, but I also say, "My last day of work will be Tuesday, July 16th (or whatever)" -- only because I'm never sure whether the "effective" date is supposed to mean that's the last day I'll be working, or the first day I won't be working, and I don't want anyone else to be unclear about that, either.
You don't have to give any reason why you're leaving, although I imagine it's no secret that you're in nursing school, but you can certainly give a brief explanation. Also, it's a nice touch to say something about how much you've enjoyed working there, or how much you've learned, or something like that.
Good luck with your studies!

Address it to your immediate supervisor. Date it.
I am resigning my position as ________ effective ______. My last date of work will be __________.
Sign it.
Keep a copy for your records. It serves as proof that you followed the rules of your job that you gave a written copy of proper notice of resignation so that you can collect any benefits.
If a reason for resigning is required, tell them that you have found an opportunity somewhere else.

Wow!! I can totally relate to your situation. I start my nursing program Fall 09 and don't really know how I'm going to work with clinicals. Although I will only be taking Nursing classes, because I finished my pre-reqs, it is still difficult to leave my job. It pays pretty good and I like my job, but I have always had a desire to be a nurse. I figured that its now or never, especially when my pre-reqs. will expire next year to enter a nursing program. Anyway... I'm rambling... I think you should write your letter as professional as possible. I know you are close to your boss, but I think it is the best practice. By the way, Congrats to getting into nursing school!
Thank you all so much. Can't wait to turn in my letter !
