Becoming a State Surveyor as a Registered Nurse (RN) typically involves several steps, and the specific requirements vary by state. State Surveyors, also known as health facility surveyors or surveyor investigators, help ensure that healthcare facilities comply with state and federal regulations.

In some states, the Joint Commission and the state's Department of Health survey facilities together as a team.

Jobs are listed on your state's Department of Health Services or equivalent agency.

Here are some general steps:

  • Most State Surveyor positions require at least a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Gain clinical experience. Work as an RN in various healthcare settings to gain a solid understanding of healthcare practices and standards. Experience in long-term care, acute care, or other relevant settings is beneficial.
  • Stay informed. Stay current on state and federal regulations related to healthcare facilities. Familiarize yourself with the regulatory bodies and agencies overseeing healthcare standards in your state.
  • Acquire relevant skills. Develop skills in assessment, communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail. State Surveyors need to be able to evaluate healthcare facilities thoroughly for compliance with regulations.
  • Seek additional training. Some states may require specific training for individuals interested in becoming State Surveyors. This could involve coursework or workshops related to surveying and regulatory compliance.
  • Obtain relevant certifications. Some states or employers may require specific surveying or healthcare quality certifications. Examples include Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM). Attaining CPHQ certification is an excellent way to learn about regulations (I did it and recommend it).
  •  Attend conferences, workshops, and events related to healthcare quality and regulatory compliance. Networking with professionals in the field can provide valuable insights and opportunities.
  • Monitor job openings. Check for job openings for State Surveyor positions with state health departments or relevant agencies. Pay attention to the specific qualifications and requirements outlined in the job postings.
  • Expect interviews to assess your knowledge of healthcare regulations, your ability to conduct surveys, and your communication skills. Highlight your relevant experience and commitment to maintaining high standards of care.
  • Demonstrate professionalism. State Surveyors are expected to be objective, impartial, and fair in their assessments. Show that you can maintain a high level of professionalism in challenging situations.

It's essential to note that the specific requirements and processes for becoming a State Surveyor can vary by state, so it's crucial to research the requirements in your particular state. You may want to contact your state's health department or relevant regulatory agency for specific guidance and information.

Best wishes,
