Dear Nurse Beth,
I'm a high school student and I want to become a Forensic Nurse but I am very confused on the process to becoming one. Can you please tell me the steps I would have to pursue because I did a lot of research but it's very unclear.
Good for you!
First of all, keep your grades up in high school :) If you go into college well prepared in English and Math, it will save you time by not having to take remedial courses.
My husband, who is in Education, tells me some high schools have Forensic Programs to prepare students for this field.
Forensic nursing is a fascinating blend of legal, counseling and nursing skills while supporting victims of trauma. This may help you:
According to the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IFNN) A forensic nurse is a nurse who provides specialized care for patients who are victims and/or perpetrators of trauma (both intentional and unintentional). Forensic Nurses are NURSES first and foremost. However, the specialized role of forensic nurses goes far beyond medical care; forensic nurses also have a specialized knowledge of the legal system and skills in injury identification, evaluation and documentation.
After attending to a patient's immediate medical needs, a forensic nurse often collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, and consults with legal authorities.
Forensic nursing is a nursing specialty, so first you have to become a nurse and then you can specialize in forensic nursing. To become a nurse, you must take both general education courses and nursing pre-requisites and then apply to nursing school. I recommend getting your BSN if you are able.
After you graduate, you can receive specialized training in different areas, including Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).
What a great goal you have set for yourself. To learn more, visit the IFNN website. Also be sure and talk to other students here on site on the Student Forums.
I would love to job shadow you some day
Best wishes,
Nurse Beth
