What is the best path to get into ER nursing for someone who doesn't plan to do the EMT route? I'm waiting to get word if I've been accepted or not into the nursing program. It is a typical 2 yr. Once I finish that I plan to do the online RN to BSN. Yet what should I do to get into ER nursing?

Try working as an ER tech at a hospital.

When you get to your last semester, do your preceptorship/practicum in the ER if possible, or in a critical care area if not. Do what is necessary in school to allow yourself to have a choice (we had to score over a certain number on a standardized med-surg test). Also, remember that you may change your mind about your goals if you haven't even started school yet. I thought I was going to become a psych NP when I started school, and I now work in an ICU (I hated my psych rotation). Teching is a great idea, in the ER if possible at a hospital you might want to work at. Also, make sure you start applying for jobs a few months before graduation to make sure others don't snap up all the non-med-surg positions. Good luck!
