How far would you be willing to travel for a job?

I have an interview with a company 80 miles from where I live. It is a monday thru friday job, no weekends or holidays. I currently work at a basic care facility 32 hours a week just about every holiday and every other weekend. I worked here before I graduated with my RN and they continue to pay me my LPN wage with no mention of increasing the pay.

I have been unable to get an RN job here in town and have had to look elsewhere. I am a little hesitant about the commute because of the weather during the winter. I know I would like this job and all it entails, but again the commute is quite a distance.

So how far do you travel for work or would be willing to travel for a job?

I drive about 50 miles one way.

I used to drive 45 miles each way, but some folks I worked with were doing 70+ miles one way. A lot depends on the roads you will travel - freeways? fast and well tended? Multiple routes if traffic boggs down? If it works out would moving closer be an option? Will the extra road time away from home be a problem for you and your family?

The extra road time is not a problem. It is interstate all the way, 2 lanes each side, so the traffic is not bad as I live more rural. I would like to move closer in time, but that all depends on our house selling, if an when we decide to move.

I used to live 120 miles from my place of employment one-way, 240 miles round trip. This was back in 2003 and 2004, which was before I became a nurse. I've been on many commutes; hence, my user name is appropriate. :)

I moved from Boston to Tampa, FL....enough said haha

I went from Springfield, Missouri to New Haven, Connecticut for a job. If the conditions and money are right, I would go to the moon for the experience. Traveling gives you great experience and they pay for a lot of things like housing, utilites and such. :D

Thanks for the response. This is a job that would be mon-fri 8-5. It would be 160 miles round trip, so I would be spending about 3 hours a day on the road. Our winters here can be pretty tough, but the thought of no weekends or holidays is appealing.

You are being totally taken advantage of at your current place, you need a change. Best of luck!

160mi round trip. I would do it for the right pay and atmosphere. Then again, I love to drive. Especially when I'm driving home. I crank up that music and it helps me unwind. Better than a glass of wine.

There is something to be said for getting every weekend off and all holidays off. I have that set up right now and I have never had that before. It used to be that I had to fight to get the days off that I wanted. I would want it even if I had to commute a long way. I am glad that you have found a position that respects your new title. You worked hard for it and a company should recognize it by paying you fairly. Take care, Jen

I would do that commute if it were a good job AND I was pretty darn sure that I wouldn't find anything close to comparable where I was currently living.

If it were feasible, I would most definitely consider moving closer though. Good luck. :)
