How Do I Follow Up After an Online Application?

I just submitted an application to a big hospital on a unit that I would love to work in. Should I follow up immediately? If so how do I do that? I know times are really tough and I really don't want my application to be lost in the sea of others.

x2. After I passed my CRT boards when I was in RT school, I applied and sent e-mails to the RT director at the hospital where I was working while in school. After a month of this, I visited his office and the department daily letting him know how eager I was to get started. He hired me four days later. After this experience, I always sought out the director of the department or unit I wanted to work and bypassed the "please fill out the online application" process. Each time, the person who I went and personally talked to told me that I was hired then asked me to fill out an online application for procedural purposes. Take the bull by the horns, meet the person most important to your hiring face to face, and let them know how much you want to excel in their unit.

Sent a hardcopy of your resume and call the human resources to follow up within the week. If you can get the name of the nurse manager, you could also call her/him. Just a short message like "I applied online, very interested in working for your facility/unit, is it possible to set up an interview?"

I agree go there in person so they can see a face with your name. Bring resume and cover letter with you. Also, email and call on a weekly basis.

Not all job postings tell you where you will be working. My last job I applied to was at a 10 floor hospital. I know it was med/surg but there are 3 med/surg floors in the hospital and HR wouldn't tell me which one I had applied to. How do you find out which exact floor you applied to work at so you can go there in person?

So...what if it's a new unit I applied to in an out-of-state hospital and I have no idea who the head of that unit is and I have to go through the nurse recruiters? I guess that's my only option?
