Our unit will be closing, but we don't know when. A new facility is to be built in town that will take over any rehab pts from the hospital. How can I find out if they have gotten their CON? I tried to look on the state website, but it's not listed on the March publication, but their name was on the Feb one. I have emailed the state DHEC, but they may not tell me.

Certificate of Need.
Depends on your state, each state can set their own requirements, but best place to start would be with the Dept of Health for your state. If they do not have the answer, do you know the name of the company that will own the new facility? You can also contact them.
Have they actually started building yet? Remember that even once the physcial building gets completed, it will still be at least several months before they will be taking in patients, there are many other approvals that will need to be received before they can open the doors to the public.

Obtaining a CON is a costly, LONG and DRAWN-OUT process. I know, for I have been involved with several HHA's trying to obtain theirs in new territories. And there are no guarantees that it will be successful. I once worked for one agency whose owner spent $500,000 in application and legal fees, fighting the state and other larger agencies who already had their CON's in the counties she was going after, getting denial after denial after these agencies kept filing appeal after appeal. It finally put her and our agency out of business.
I did get an answer and they haven't gotten it yet.
