How to build skills without getting in the way?

I'm trying to learn more about codes and become more comfortable with them while on orientation so I can be effective once I'm on my own. So far, I feel like my presence is more in the way than helpful, but I need to learn so that I can be a contributing member of my team in the ER at some point.

What can I do as a new ER nurse to improve my skills in code situations (full arrests) and other types of emergent situations? I don't want to jump in when I'm off orientation and not be able to perform.

My new coworkers have been overall supportive and I don't want to appear like an idiot if I don't know what I'm doing, but the truth is when I was a floor nurse I didn't get a lot of code experience. The most I've done is compressions and meds (once). I am trying to be humble being a novice all over again.

One place I see people fumble is with the monitor. Any time I am in a new ER with an unfamiliar monitor, I download the manual and read it. I was soooooo happy to see Lifepaks in my current place! :)

Become an expert — know the code cart drawers in and out, know the meds, know the monitor, know the ACLS algorithms.
