I just join allnurses.com because i wan't to find out on how can I become an OR Nurse. Currently I work on an Ambulatory Procedure Unit for 8 months now. When I was a student, my favorite part in my whole internship in nursing was the OR. It doesn't matter if we have a short case ranging from 30 mins-1hour or from doing a complex brain surgery for 8-10 hours. I love it. The thing is, how do I become an OR Nurse? Do I need to apply for a certain course for OR Nursing?

I think it depends on where you are as to what the requirements are. In Ontario, you need to take a certificate course at a college.

I went straight to the OR upon graduating from nursing school. I went through a 6 month AORN training program at my job for the OR. If you can find a hospital that offer one, you will be set. I think they have them mainly at bigger hospitals, but I'm not 100% sure. A lot of hospitals will only take you after you have a year of med surge experience. It's hard to find hospitals that will take you straight from the OR from graduation but they do exist. I interviewed at several hospitals around the nation, until I found the perfect one. Start looking early for job positions in the OR, do not wait until you are in your last few weeks of school. Good luck!!
