If it's outside the normal range I'd call the MD and notify them, and if they make a stink ask them when they would like to be notified.

Is the result expected or not, an improvement to previous results of the patient or is the patient on any type of potassium replacement protocol that is already in place?

There are many things to consider. You really have to use your critical thinking skills here. How abnormal is the value? Has this been ongoing? What other medications/fluids are they on? Can it wait to mention during rounds? These would all influence my decision.
