Houston Nurse Residency Winter/Spring 2024

Published

Hi everyone! I will be graduating with my BSN this semester and I'm applying for residencies in the Houston area. I already applied to Houston Methodist but wanted to hear about other programs that might be interesting. Best of luck!

I remember I applied early September and talked to a recruiter. she told me they were still setting up dates for the Spring cohort and that she would call me when its done. I saw that they have hiring events going on so im debating if I should just go to one

yeah just go LOL. I wish I could go but im gonna call bc the whole back & forth emailing to ask little questions and having to wait so long is kinda annoying

has anyone applied to HCA and got contacted ? I applied to 5 different locations and haven't heard back at all. I emailed the recruiter too

I heard about a week and a half ago they got the number of positions in for Spring but haven't heard anything else. It's really frustrating being in the air.

sigh what the heck ?

Kind of off topic but curious,

I lived in Houston and it's not really cheap to live here anymore and there's no seasons. Why is it that everyone wants a residency here? Is it just the Texas medical center, economy, or are residencies not available in other states? Or a combination of all?

I was wondering the same thing. I am newer to the area but I was thinking maybe there are more schools with larger classes because like you said it isn't cost of living LOL. It was a lot easier in GA for my classmates.

Specializes in NICU.

For me personally I'm from here, but I went to college in DC. It probably would have been easier to get into residency or a get a job there in terms of connections and favoring our students. However, the cost of living is very high so I made the decision to move back here. I do agree that it has become more expensive here, but a lot of people say it's cheaper here than where they're from (based on the people I met in college). The other main reason people said they wanted to come here was because they want to live in a warmer climate.

mine's honestly bc I was born there. I grew up in nigeria, finished high school in canada & currently in miami for my BSN. I'm sick of moving & wanna settle down fr. miami is too expensive,  pay isn't the best, it's hard bc I don't speak spanish & I don't even like it here. so I considered moving back to texas. bc it's v familiar

The cost of living is unfortunately increasing so much that single income individuals are unable to live comfortably, even on a solid salary.

Houston's COL is better than say Miami, Denver, anywhere on the west coast,  Portland, Seattle, etc.

I plan on living in the med center, I'm finding decent places ~1500/month.

With differentials and benefits, I will probably make around 75-80k my first year as a RN in Houston. That is better than a lot of industries when it comes to entry level pay.

won't be balling, but I'll be comfortable. But I am single, no kids and minimal debt.
