Hello everyone,
I have started a thread for anyone who will be applying for Houston Community College ADN Spring 2016. Please add any questions and or comments and hopefully we will be able to exchange information here and keep ourselves positive on our journey to get accepted into the nursing program. I can't wait to hear from everyone! I haven't taken my HESI A2 exam so any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Moving forward

Hi,
I'm applying for Spring as well. As for the Hesi, make sure to brush up on your ratios. There's a lot of them on the math part. Hope all goes well. Also, they have a lot of the questions from the study guide.

Where can I get the application? Will they be provided at the info session? I have tried the links given on their nursing plan page and they do not work. Thanks to everyone in advance.
Thank you for the tip. I have been studying like crazy!!
Hello jarce107, that is too weird I tried the link too and it says page is not found! No the application did not come with the packet at the info session. They specifically said to type in the application online and print it out. Please let me know if you are able to find it. I will let you know as well.
Try the following:

Hello everyone! I haven't applied or gone to an information session but I am starting to consider HCC's program as one of my options. Does anyone know how the Pharmacology class works? Do you have to register for it before the program (as in this Fall), do you first have to get accepted, or do you take it while you're taking the other nursing classes?
Just to share a little on my background: this Fall is my last semester at HCC (unless I apply and get accepted into their ADN program), and I'll have enough credits to get my Associates... I already took the HESI... so far I've only applied to one other program. JUST yesterday I started to look into HCC's and Lonestar Cyfair's program. I hope I am able to get those applications done before the deadline.
How far along is everyone else in their application process? What have been your experiences so far with them?
hello, they don't require you to take the pharmacology before anymore. You first need to get accepted and then they will advise as to when to register for the class. I would advise you to sign up for the HCC ADN information session as you will need proof of that once you apply. I believe they have one coming up next week. Before the end of this month I will be taking my HESI. Do you have any tips you would like to share? How is the math portion?? I am nervous about that!
Awesome! The last time I looked into HCC's nursing program it was required to take pharmacology before starting the program and you first had to get approved for it. Yes! There will be an information session on the 20th; I registered yesterday! I hope I am able to finish everything on time.
As for the HESI, I used the Elsevier 3rd study guide. The math portion teaches you EVERYTHING you need to know for the test. I was nervous about it too, but it turns out I did the best in that section. 55 questions (5 practice questions...all sections have 5 practice questions)
**Definitely study your fractions as most questions will be over that. And do know measurements as well (household, distance, volume, and mass..). It really wasn't that bad.
**The vocab section in Elsevier's guide is great as well. Most words (if not all) were on my test. 55 questions
**Grammar was very similar to vocab...like, which word goes best in the blank section...which word is used incorrectly, etc. Too vs. two vs to...stuff like that. 55 Q's
**Reading was my least favorite because by the time I got to it I was ready to be done! Lol. Read a passage with 2-3 paragraphs, and then answer 3-4 questions from the passage. No tips here. Just pay attention to what you're reading and know the difference between facts, opinions, and statements. 55 dreading questions. Lol.
**Anatomy I thought was very general. From what I remember most questions were anatomical questions. But do know the different body systems, what they do, etc. 30 questions.
I don't know if the HESI for HCC required critical thinking, but if it does, or you need it for another school, just keep in mind the ABC's (Airway, breathing, circulation), and do know Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Good luck on your HESI! You will do great! :)
Thank you so much. This really gives me some relief! HCC does not require the critical thinking but I wanted to take it anyway just in case because if they didn't accept me for Spring I was planning on just going ahead and applying for UTHCS Summer 2016. If its not so much to ask would you be able to give an example to what type of question format would I expect on HESI for e.g. household, distance, volume, and mass..
An example would be something like, if you have 1200 milliliters, how many liters do you have... another example would be: 3.5 pints, how much is that in ounces, or how many cups is that...same thing does for grams/milligrams, inches/feet/yards...1 kilo = 2.2 lbs...the Elsevier 3rd edition guide has all of them on page 36. Hope that helps some!
