Most hospitals schedule using 12hr shifts

I have found around where I am in upstate NY it not only depends on the facility but the unit. There are hospitals here where one unit may do both 8s and 12s, some that do mostly 8s and a couple 12s, some that do all 12s. Totally depends on the unit. So I would way to contact the facilites in your area and ask--if you have an idea of the area or areas you might be interested in working you can ask about specific units. Also something to keep in mind--depending on where you are at the shift start times could vary--standard times are usually 7-3-11 but don't asume. Here out biggest hospital does 8-4-12 for all of the psych units and psych ER excect the child psych floor and they go to bed earlier. I loved the 8a start time personally. 7 is too early for me! So just an additional thing to keep in mind when calling around. Oh and too......at least here, some of the EDs and IV/PICC team nurses have non-traditional shift times. Its common in the ED to see 9a-9p, 11a-11p.....I think they do this to beef up the nursing staff during times when they tend to be more busy--so you can ask about that too.

It depends on what kind of nursing you would like to do while in school, and the area you live in also. SNFs offer 8/12hr shifts and the hospitals in my area only offer 12hr shifts. Good luck:)

Im currently working 12 hour Baylor shifts in LTC while I go back to school,Saturday and Sundays 7A-7P(+8hour bonus) so I work 24 hours a week and get paid for 32
