Hospitalist NP

Any nurse practitioners out there functioning in a hospitalist role? I'd be interested to hear about your typical day. :)

I just took a job and my collaborating physician is the hospitalist. I'll let you know how it goes.

In the hospital I work at, there are 6 to 8 NPs who work for some of the big internal medicine and cardiology practices, and function as hospitalists, although they are not paid by the hospital. They manage the practices' patients in the hosptial, and write admitting orders, round on the patients, etc.

I love working with them because they are

1. Available

2. Thorough

3. Respectful of the nurses' opinions.

It is actually easier to get admitting orders from them that are complete, because they understand the hospital system, and know that they have to give us the boring diet, activity, lab orders, where I often have to "coach" the MDs to pull the appropriate admitting orders out of them.

They alse seem to have very good assessment skills, and will respond to their feeling of "patient just doesn't look right". Of course, they have based this on their experience as nurses in the past. (Okay, I know, another subject!)

They are VERY busy, and seem to work 50+ hours a week. I just hope they are getting paid a lot.

I am working on an MSN with CNS--I don't think I would want to do their job, because they seem to work too hard!
