hi all, i have been looking into hospital scholarships for college (where the hospital gives you money and then you work for them after graduation)...does anyone have any recent information about any of the scholarships that are offered in south florida? i am especially interested in the memorial healthcare system scholarship, if anyone has gotten it i would love to hear from you! what is the probability of getting it?
thanks so much, it would be a huge help if you gave me any info on any of these types of scholarships in florida. :)
If you go to BC's program, the scholarship coordinators come & speak to your GI/GU class & it's the one & only time you apply bc they do it by cohorts (they said they get a set amount of $ each semester)
Since you want to work for Memorial, I'd go to South campus bc thats where you do your clinicals & typically South campus students get their applications pulled first. You'll probably be doing trends there & if your preceptor really likes you etc. they may recommend you to be hired
From what I've been told scholarships in general are limited at the moment from the hospitals (only 2 in my group got offered scholarships so far) bc of the economy & Memorial last I've heard has a hiring freeze (they don't hire new RNs unless you get a scholarship so its kind of a Catch 22)
On the bright side though, theres time before you graduate & most places reimburse their nurses eventually & pay for you to continue education :)

thanks! i am planning on volunteering at memorial this summer (a nursing professor told me that volunteering at a hospital sometimes help for getting into a college...true or not i have no idea, i would love to find out though!) so maybe that will help my chances of getting the scholarship...
i have heard about the hiring freeze, it's terrible. i would want to get that scholarship for the job after graduation...
but before even trying for the scholarship i would have to get into nursing school...i heard it's really hard. what school do/did you go to cf08?
sorry for all the questions, it's just that i am kind of lost!

Great post! That is the reason why I am going to South campus at BC. I was told you do your clinicals at Memorial :) Thank you for the information!

i volunteered at memorial west my senior year of hs & i loved it, any community service in addition to what is required is a plus on any college application. my advice is just try & get the best grades you can in your prereqs, don't sweat it if you struggle in micro, chem, anatomy etc. bc you'll learn hints all over again during process. if you took the sat or act you'll be fine on the hesi, i recommend taking it as soon as you finish a&p 86 so it's fresh.
as for getting in i don't know if its hard or easy bc my semester was the 1st they applied the hesi to & i heard stories they didn't have as many applicants but just apply to a few schools.
i go to central campus & i'm almost done with my 1st year of school, it's hard but its well worth it. i highly don't recommend working during process i & ii because you're still getting your footing down, but once you get over that hurdle it gets better bc gigu you're getting into the stuff you'll deal with daily.
i'm planning on moving after i graduate so i didn't apply for any of the scholarships- honestly, i was a major planner before nursing school, but the past year ive kind of learned to let go, do the best i can to pass and take each day as it comes with school. i have 5 classes left before i have to worry about a job, i may not get what i want right out of school, but take whatever you can get, pay your dues now & the rewards will come later, because some experience is better then nothing :)
best of luck!
Hello,
I just graduated from BC South Campus and I received the Memorial Scholarship. At first, I was not even going to apply but I am so happy that I did. Only three of us in my class received it. I have heard how difficult it is to find a job after graduation and knowing that I won't have that issue is a relief.
I was interviewed by about 8 nurse managers in a panel type forum. They ask a lot of "What would you do" nursing scenario questions. The great thing about the scholarship is that they pay the rest of your tuition for school and Jackie, the scholarship coordinator, is amazing. I received at least 4 NCLEX study books from her as well which are valuable resources for class.
They don't come and talk to you about it until you get to GIGU and then you are interviewed during Psych rotations. So I would focus on getting thru process 1 and 2 because those are the deal breaker classes. Our class started out with 88 students and we graduated with 13 "original" of us that started together.
Good luck and I am here to help in anyway I can.
awesome! thank you so much for that information...it is extremely helpful.
wow, so only three of you got the scholarship? if you don't mind me asking (you can pm me if you would rather), what do you think made you stand out from the others who applied for the scholarship? like, did you volunteer or have great gpa?
also, how was your experience at bc overall? those odds of getting through the program are kind of daunting! what class was probably the hardest?
my choices right now are:
1. fiu
2. bc
3. fau
40 nova (this would have been my first choice but they give no scholarships!)
so i am basically torn any info from those going/gone through the program is a huge help!
thanks again!!!!

just wondering if you remember who interviewed you? I know one is Jacque Vitali. not too sure who the other one is.... maybe brown or something? thanks if you can help!
Jacque was definitely in the interview. As far as the others, I am not sure. They were various nurse managers from different floors. They were all really nice. Once your are selected for an interview just smile and show them that you have a great personality. Also ask many questions. They love to hear that you are interested in professional development and different committees in the hospital that you can be apart of.
