Hi all,
I know there is a big hold on hiring new nurses at hospitals here in Jersey..but is there a freeze on hiring administrative staff as well?
I applied and took a basic test at Morristown Memorial for a unit rep position a few months ago. They said they would call me in regards to coming in for an interview in 2 weeks. After about 3 weeks, I called to check on the interview and they stated that they were waiting to here back from the different units to find out their needs as far as unit reps.
Gave them a few more weeks..and then called back. Apparently, no units need reps now. But, I see a long list of unit rep positions..full-time..part-time and per diem. Even see them at the other hospitals at Atlantic Health.
What is going on?? Is there a hire freeze across the board? I also applied last week for Mountainside Hospital..so I'm going to follow up this week.
My next step is to start going to the HR departments in person. I really want a weekend position..to get my foot in the door..and also since I won't be working my present job after June.
Any ideas?

Hiring has been weird all over. I hear that many hospitals have canceled their Externship programs.

I work at hackensack and there is a definite hiring freeze at my hospital and at most hospitals. its scary right now bc the economy is bad. idk what to say but just give it time and be persistent. :) and stay positive!!!
Yeah..I figured. I actually heard they are laying off per diem unit reps at Morristown! Just great.
Well, I'm going to just keep applying until they have no choice but to call me in because they are tired of seeing my application! lol
I also work at HUMC and I just heard of yet another unit that is closing down Then again, who knows how it has to do with all of the legal problems that the higher-ups are having...someone has to pay for it.

I'm feeling you on that!! I applied for 26 positions in NYC at NY Pres and I got their standard email rejection-ON ALL 26 POSITIONS! I can't believe that after hearing nonstop about nursing being "recession-proof" through school I may have to get a job bagging groceries to pay my bills. The only choice we have is to remain positive or start looking outside the northeast for jobs. I hear Texas is in serious need of nurses.
I'm not even looking for a nursing position..just a regular SUPPORT position and it's crazy!!
I liked Texas and if I was done with school..I would seriously consider going there..just for a year or 2 to get the experience..

INTERNAL! I was offered a position at a hospital in Jersey only to find out that they hired internally, and they never even called me!!! Left several messages and they never returned my call, I had to find out from the DON who was offering me the job!
Oh, no!!! That truly sucks! I was excited to hear you actually got a job then to find they just yanked it away from you. That's just awful. I really fell for you but take comfort in knowing you're not alone-we're all feeling it. Keep your head up.
Yeah..it's all about who you know and how close INSIDE the system you are..urgh!

Lovely,
Did you ever hear back from Mountainside? I live in town and was going to apply, but your story is causing me to hesitate to even bother!
I graduated in 2006 but haven't worked since then.. I think with my lack of experience that would be another hurdle!
Thanks,
Dave
