Exelsior is not accepted by all state BON's.....

Im from texas and excelsior is recognized... Anyone navy corpsman with experience?

I get your reasoning, but I am just saying that to get a degree from a school you may not be able to utuilize in several states could be a problem.

As I am not a corpsman, but only a nurse trying to help, I will shut up now......:smokin::smokin::smokin:

Look at UMUC, it's a great school, fully accredited and will grant you some credit for time served. You really should look at taking classes locally though to maximize the effect of the GI Bill and to get reaclimated into school before you go into the suck that is nursing school.

Not a corpsman, but I was military, and I am going for Nursing.

I was a corpsman, now I'm an Army Reserve Medic. Feel free to PM me with questions. One of my soldiers is also in the excelsior program.

I was an Army Medic I did the EC program and am now a RN in Florida, wasn't any major problem. Email me if you want.

Good luck to you

Steve

Excelsior isn't recognized in Virginia, either; if you're a Virginia resident, EC requires you to sign an document acknowledging this prior to enrollment. EC is said to give generous credit for Hospital Corps School. Does anyone know if this has actually proven to be true, though?

And can those who have taken courses at EC (hi Steve!) tell us how that experience was for you?

BTW, re Student4Life's comment, UMUC (University of Maryland University College) offers many online programs but doesn't offer nursing - http://www.umuc.edu/programs/undergraduate.shtml

This is incorrect.

If you graduated before 12/31/2009 you can be licensed by examination. All those who graduate following that date can be licensed by endorsement with 960 hours of practice as an RN. Full time, that works out to be 27 weeks.

So Excelsior is absolutely recognized by Virginia, just with stipulations.

Excelsior has stipulations in some states with only California and Maryland only accepting on a case-by-case basis. On one of the previous threads it linked that Maryland has a 1000 hour stipulation to get endorsed in. If you aren't willing to move to get your experience you can work at the VA, military installations, and any federal facility with a license from any state. Check your state BON and the excelsior website for the most up to date information about any states acceptance and ensure you can live with the stipulations before you sign up.

As someone who doesn't have any general education classes done anywhere else you will need to take quiet a few courses in addition to the Nursing Core courses. As a medic I am to do all of the nursing core courses and then general Ed. I have an Associates degree from elsewhere though so most of my gen ed was out of the way.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask here or send me a pm.

Thank You for all the reply.. How long did it took to finish the course? Also I was planning on applying at my community college but nursing is so competitive with very long waiting list. So, right now my best option is to go with EC and see from there..after im done with ASN i want to take BSN. Does anyone have any experience from ASN-BSN with excelsior? I just wanna make sure im making the right decision with Excelsior...

If you have the discipline to study I would go with excelsior. I was a army medic but I also went into lpn school before I enter the military. No 91c slots. Any way, I think you will be fine. I took all my preq's at universities and colleges while I was in so my core is done and all I have is the nursing courses. You can do, it we all sit behind the same board to take the NCLEX and if your state says yes you are fine and that is all that matter good luck
