I recently accepted a full time position as a hospice nurse. I have no experience in hospice but I do have experience in home health. Are there any resources that anyone could recommend to to help me in this transition to this new position.

Thanks in Advance

Check with your supervisor or the education department to see if your company offers ELNEC training. Also find out if they offer any sort of computer based education. Also if you are in a position to join HPNA (Hospice Palliative Nurses Association) they provide access to many educational online opportunities.

NHPCO website. That's the standard we're held to. You will need to know eligibility guidelines as well as symptom management right away. Get a copy of the Corridor Group's Quick Flips reference book for eligibility (expensive so your employer will probably get you one). Ask your preceptor or medical director exactly what they want since it does vary some from company or doc. Find out which scales the medical director relies on-- most are standard like FAST for Alzheimer's staging. Lastly, and most importantly, STEAL what you love about others' assessments and documentation. Listening and imitating your seasoned colleagues will make you awesome in no time!

Good luck!

Join HPNA, they have a member's only educational section and try to attend a conference in the future. Purchase the core curriculum book from HPNA (it is what is used to study for the certification test). Your employer should have hospice education available to use as well. ELNEC is also a great resource and NHPCO websites. Good luck!
