Does anyone work at a facility that has a specific policy re: Horizontal or Lateral Violence/Bullying? I'd love a copy. I'll be starting soon in my first Nurse Manager position and if nothing else, I'd love to institute a policy as such on my new unit.
It's been awhile since I've been here to AllNurses! I need to reacquaint myself! :)

Hi Zee_RN
At my hospital we have recently introduced online learnng packages. One of them is all about bullying in the workplace and consists of a number of multi choice questions. This "e-learning" package is one of several compulsory ones that all nursung staff have to do yearly. I am sure that we have a policy that goes with it. I am not back at work for a couple of days and would be happy to check it out. (I work in ED or ER in Perth Western Australia). If you want to send me a private message, I will get back to you.

Thank you, Patrick! I will email you.

Good idea. Don't start out with this, though. You will need to build concensus among ALL nurse managers, and then Directors, and then the CNO to institute this policy. Then the hard work begins. You will spend more than 60% of your time managing this hostility, directly and indirectly. Do it well. If you really want to hold people accountable, you will need to work with HR to incorporate the expectations into all clinical area job descriptions, and performance evals (including your own, all managers and directors too, because they engage in hostility also) throughout the entire organization. Whether this is successful is whether you, the leaders, act like leaders and lead by example. A policy is meaningless until it becomes culture - and an online course annually isn't telling you anything you don't already know. Face it, challenge it, work it, and don't give up!

We have fairly standard policies in the UK health service. ours is called the Dignity at Work policy.
Here is a link
I know it is a UK based so uses many of the British legislation but it may be helpful
