I'm strongly considering going into home health care. Can anyone give me their opinion on whether it's better to go with the large national agencies (like Gentiva or Visiting Nurses Assoc.) or to go with the smaller agencies?

My experience has been: Large Agencies,i.e. VNA, pay less and demand more.....BUT....small ones don't always have enough work, or benefits. If you NEED steady work and benefits, go big. If you want autonomy, and don't mind working for several agencies, go small. I presently work with 4 small agencies and wouldn't have it any other way.

I have done home health 11 years and I think the smaller ones benies stink most of the time. I found there were more positions/people at larger companies. Salaries are harder to pin down. My last visit nurse position in home health by the time you factored in travel, office time, documentation time and patient care time, I ended up making 8.00 to 11.00 per hour. Not worth it. It is very different elsewhere.
