Hi everyone,

I am going back to home health nursing after 5 years. I've been a stay at home mom and also worked with my husband's business. I am excited, nervous and looking forward to seeing patients again. Most of the nurses I have spoken with have told me I'll have no problems getting back in. I look forward to posting my experiences with you! Also, I am new to posting, so bear with me!:)

Welcome back to HH lharjes! I am brand spanking new to HH myself, just started this week :D! So far so good. I'm sure you'll have no problem getting back into the swing of things. Good Luck to you!

I went into HH after 17 years of being home raising kids and running a home based business. It took me a bit getting back up to speed, but it is the best nursing job I ever had! I had to learn new meds and tecniques, but I am a better nurse for gaining wisdom after children and clients. I am grateful my boss hired me and other nurses who were out a long time. My husband is their Hospice Chaplain and I am sure that's why she even considered me (I am an LPN). Once she realized how well an experienced LPN could fill the gaps, she has since hired many more. I can really see myself retiring from this career.

If Obama dosen't replace us with foreign nurses!

Thanks Y'all for the encouraging words! Well, it's a for sure thing! And yes, I am so grateful that I too have the opportunity to return as well. I'll be working with an older population which I love. Thanks guys!

Specializes in behavioral health.

This is an area that I am considering. I don't have much bedside nursing. I have 5 1/2 years of behavioral health nursing under me. I was off for almost five years due to disability. My health has improved, but I still need to watch to get adequate rest. I jsut quit a job at a NH after only 6 weeks, I feel really depressed about that, too, But, it was just way too much. I was so tired by the end of my shift, and I still had my charting to do. I was not happy with my charting because I could not even think by the end of the shift. Twenty-seven patient load was too much for me, things just never wnet smoothly. I was interrupted during my med pass, to take phone orders from drs. I eas interrupted from ohone calls from family members. I would not get out of work until at least one hour after work, And, was working off the clock doing my charting. I had minimal breaks, if any. This job was nnot helping me with adequate rest. The physical part didn't bothert me, it was all of the mental stress. I would go home and remeber things that I should have charted, but then it was too late. Originally, I gave a formal two week notice, but then found that I was unable to fulfill that. Of course, my name is mud with them. I wish that I wold have stuck it out. But, my family members encouraged me to quit because they would nt give me a good reference anyways, after leaving only 6 weeks at the job. I had a terrible family situation going on. That was under another post.

I jhave applied to a job that is in drs. office, doing allergy shots and dr. office duties. It is only 16 hrs. a week and only $10 an hr. Due, to my family situation of needing to be available for my grandson, I thinkthis is very doable. And, the hours are 8-5.

Another consideration, was a home health position working 20 hrs. a week at $16 an hr. I thought that this would be a positon where I could work around my schedule, being a bit more flexible. I don't know if I would like idea of PA nursing being with one pt. for 8 hrs. Isn't there other work in that area besides just nursing. e.g. housecleaning, cooking, etc. And, would they hire me for a mere 16 hrs. a week,

I need to get away from bedside nursing so this is an area I am interested in too. Do you have to take a paycut when you go from bedside nursing?

Iharjes I wish you all the luck in the world in your new job

Specializes in Tele/Cardiac.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and I'm not too sure how to navigate through it but I can relate to this post. I graduated with my BSN in May of 2008, being two months pregnant. I passed the NCLEX in July, still fighting the hyperemesis gravidarum I experienced throughout my entire nine months!!!! I have a beautiful baby boy that I would not trade for the world but I still haven't worked one day as an RN yet. I worked as an extern but quit right before graduation so I didn't have a job lined up. I have no doubt that I can find a job easily but the problem is getting myself to apply. I do not want to give up the stay at home mom role. I do however feel like I worked so hard to get where I am (an RN) and I'm not even using it. I want the best of both worlds....to be the best mom to my son and to be the best nurse and do what I'm passionate about. I was thinking of working in home care, hoping for some flexibility and no 12 hour shifts. I have already interviewed and they are willing to orient me well. Any suggestions or words of encouragement.....

welcomeflowrs.gif to Home Health.. Nursing's best kept secret...lharjes, and all other HH noobies, and wannabes ! :D

You're going to love HH... it truly is a breath of fresh air from hospital shifts and stresses. You have come to the right place to post concerns, joys, experiences, questions. Let us know how you make out, and how you like it.

As anywhere else, there are good agencies, and sorry ones as well. Choose wisely, ask lots of questions, get things in writing, yadayadayada.. you know the routine ! ;)

Wish you all the very best ! :nurse:

jnette, You sound so positive it is very encouraging. Thank You. After the days I have had on the rehab floor I work on, I am getting so burnt out that I was thinking of leaving nursing altogether. I am going to give HH a shot and hopefully I will like it. I already love the idea of doing something different each day instead of passing meds for hours at a time.

Best wishes for a positive experience.

Specializes in Telemetry.

Hi everyone! I just accepted a HH nurse position after working 9 years on a Telemetry floor in a hospital. For all you HH nurses out there, how do you like your job? Is it better than floor nursing? Brutally honest answers are greatly appreciated. =)

Specializes in OR, HH.

What a great thread!!! Everyone sounds so positive. I am an OR nurse (2.5yrs) and have no bedside care except RN school. During RN school I trained in an area for a semester with extensive dressing changes which should be in my favor.

Does anyone know of HH in the Pasa, CA area?
