Home health experience?

I'm just trying to figure out why they won't give me an interview for a Hospital run Hospice RN position. I have worked so hard all these years, never called in sick a day in my life, never been reprimanded for anything in 10 years ICU plus another 10 years of med-surg in the hospital.

I guess its because I have no home health experience? Or perhaps there is someone who knows someone or is one of the big wigs family that is getting the position. I just wish they'd give me an interview at least. I wish a person could find out why they won't get an interview or even looked at.

They may have received so many applications from people with extensive hospice experience that they can afford to round file the applications of those who clearly are less promising to them. Wasted manpower to deal with those not qualified.

I guess you must be right, I just was over confident that I was qualified with my extensive ICU and med-surg experience. I know some Hospices even hire nurses right out of nursing school.

So I need to figure out how to get hired with a home health agency? Or just forget Hospice alltogether?

I have only one other Hospice that I can apply with in a different county, other than that, I'd have to drive hours away, which I guess I could but I don't know if they'd hire me living so far away. And I suppose I can keep on applying with this Hospice every time they have a position open, which is not very often. If I fork out the big money and get certified for Palliative care nursing maybe that would help?

You will likely never know. Be patient, re-apply when positions open up. If you really think home care is for you, you might cut yourself free from the hospital and seek employment through outside agencies. Do your homework about home health care in general AND the particular company/unit you want to work for. Home health care is fraught with its own challenges and frustrations.

It is likely that they are only considering nurses with current/very recent experience. That is the way of it these days in almost every open nursing position... simple economics... glut of nurses, more graduating every semester, more pouring into the country daily, nurses being asked to do more with less fostering many to want to change specialties.

FYI home health agencies use taking care of sick and dying family members as experience. Take me for example I took care of my disabled sister, so I used it as experence and got hired without certification or previous experence hint.. hint ...
