Hi Guys!
I just have a quick question. My father is a newly diagnosed parapeligic. He was sent home from the nursing home on wednesday (yes the day before thanksgiving):angryfire The nursing home did not send him home with any home help except a nurse to come twice a week. We got emergency care because of the holiday and then today the nurse comes and says she won't be back because the doctor has to write a perscription for them to come. The doctor from the nursing home will not write the perscription because he has been discharged, and his primary won't write it because he hasn't seen him since all of this has occured. So now he is home, we have noone to help us with him, he has MRSA, he has a stage three sacral wound, and its just a horrible situation. Does anyone know can they do this? Can they leave him like this? Isn't it considered abandonment? I graduate in may I will be an rn and this is just ridiculous to me......I don't get it. Does anyone know any organizations that we can get to help us out also. We tried COSA and a few others but we make too much (we make 3000 a month, that just about pays the morgage and medicine bills, not to mention they have an underage kid, and a mental health kid) I just can't believe this is all happening and no one wants to take responsibiliity. Anyway this probably doesn't make sense but if anyone gets it and can help I will be more than happy to listen! lol PLEASE HELP ME before I go crazy.

Call your state ombudsman. I know there are times when the nursing home has to take him back. They cannot discharge him without making arrangements for further care needs-- your dad was dumped! If he is not doing well and home health can't come out due to lack of physician coverage, you can always go back to the start and use the ER. The home health campany was not supposed to accept the admission without confirming there was a primary care physician to sign their orders for service. We NEVER use the facility doctor unless an appointment has been set up to see the primary or for a visiting physician. Depending on the type of MRSA and the teaching that was done for you, the family, you are all at risk of infection! You should be able to find the number for the state hotline on his facility paperwork.

honestly, if he has a three stage sacral wound, MRSA, and the nurse is only coming in twice a week, I would take him to the ER and have him admitted for wound care, then have the physician at the hospital write the scripts necessary for the home care nurses or other help to come in more often.

good point...can i ask why he was discharged from a nursing home?I can see a skilled or rehab facility, then home to homecare, but why a nursing home?
It was a nursing home, but the rehab part, sorry I should have made that clear. And I don't know if it is possible well I guess anything is possible butI can't put him back in the hospital, he will hate all of us for it, he hasn't been home in 2 years and this is his first time back and he refuses to go back, he said he would rather die. I'm only nervous about the mrsa because my mother is immunocompromised from a lung ttransplant but everyone keeps telling us it is fine, however when I work in the hospital we gown and glove. I just feel like this is horrible. I don't know. I hate the health care system, and if this is how it works and if this is what I am going to onload to families I don't want to be a nurse. :angryfire
