Hello all,
I wanted to start a thread for those applying to HCC's Spring 2014 nursing program. I am a stay at home mom. I know its early but I wanted to get as much info as possible. The deadline isn't until 6/1. I'm a current HCC student. My pre-req GPA is 3.57 (all A's 1 B and 1 C ), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program.
What is everyone elses GPA? I heard its lower for the Spring.
Mine is on the lower end compared to most I've seenon here. I have a 3.57. I'm hoping they take other things into consideration & not strictly GPA like they claim. I already have a BA, my CPR card, a phlebotomy license...you know little things. I did submit them all in my packet lol you never know! I also think they should consider the differences in classes at the community college vs university level. Not to knock anyone who went to community college because hello here I am applying to one, (& there are people out there who don't go to college at all!) however two of my co-workers who are in the class graduating this December have both stated to me that they took their a&p courses at HCC & all they really did was color diagrams and easy work, it was no sweat. I took all of my pre reqs at USF and for my a&p classes we had 5 page papers every other week, discussion boards, projects...etc. The exams were very difficult. The professor would point to a bone, artery , or organ & we had to specify what it was & sometimes it's function. For examply he would point to a certain part of the intestines, we had to specify it was the duodenum and it is the first part of the small intestine & blah blah blah. This is the only class I have a C in as far as pre-reqs go. Of course this is unfair for us in this situation as compared to those who had to color for an A.
Can everyone post their G.P.A's so I know what the chances are this year? I'm concerned because mine is very low. Either a 3.13 or 3.33 if they accept a class I took after the application date. Thanks!
I've got a 3.7+.

As a cross-enrolled HCC/USF student I can't answer for anyone but myself, but I will say that both my A&P I and II classes at HCC were quite a bit more than just coloring. Our practicals were very similar to what you describe, except the instructor did not 'point' but (for example) there were numbered markers on individual fossa and tuberosities (for the skeletal system) including naming the function of the item and its intended purpose -- all in 30 seconds or the item was wrong. Spelling to the letter also counted or the item was considered wrong.
I don't know who your friends took for the course, but I can assure you mine were quite a bit more rigorous than just coloring in a diagram.
& I didn't mean literally point lol but sometimes yes ours were numbered, other times when there was a test online there were pictures with arrows pointing to a structure for us to identify. I still hate that the class was as difficult as it was :-/
It was difficult. Both A&P I and II are the 'weeder' classes for most Allied Health programs in the Florida University system.
In the 3+ years I've been attending both USF and HCC, I have found very litttle that is different between the two schools; the only striking difference is class size and the resulting use of TA's in larger classes at USF.
In addition, the only 'major' issue I've ever had with a professor was at USF. He showed up to class over five times drunk as a skunk and proceeded to hit on all the ladies in the class. The class later rebelled and went to the dean about him and he was later replaced and fired. HCC on the other hand, I've had good experiences with most of them. Odd at times, but decent and knowing the material in the grand scope of things.
Curious...has anyone applied to other programs or has LPN lined up as their backup? I was accepted to the Erwin Sept 2013 AM class & I am using that as my backup then definitely plan to transition right after. I am also turning in an application to the PHCC RN program which starts in January 2014 as well. The deadline is Monday so I'm pushing it close, but I did request all of my transcripts & I have everything except for my HCC transcript I'm not sure if I will receive that in time to make the Sept 16 deadline for PHCC. For a second...& I mean a split one...I was considering private schools but the cost knocked me back to my senses lol

Wow I have no idea who they took but my ap professor at HCC would take a tiny bone out of a model and ask us what it was. Not one class I've taken at HCC as a prereq was easy, and others who have taken classes both at Hcc and usf can attest that they are both very similar in terms of difficulty. I studied my butt off for a 4.0 while others were out taking it easy. So for this reason I am glad that HCC ONLY looks at prereq GPA as it says on the nursing page.

You're not the only one. My wife beats me to the mailbox most times in hope that she gets her old husband back that day!
