Hello all HCC Fall 2011 hopefuls! I have been following the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 threads and thought maybe it was time to start Fall 2011 now that the application process has started.
I just turned my application in this past week and received my confirmation notice in the mail. Anyone else out there that has turned in their application?
What are your plans over the next 8 months to prepare for the first semester (provided we get in)?
tthornton, maybe your hawkmail account isn't showing all of the cc'd email accounts. I had to expand the list on my yahoo account. I just noticed that there is an email on my list that has tthornton as part of the address. I'm guessing that's you. I really hope that everyone on this board gets in. It really seems like there are a bunch of great people on here. I can't wait to meet everyone.
That's me!
You guys are funny, counting the addresses. I think they've probably accepted 125 and left the remaining 20 seats for the appeals. I do hope I'm there with you all, but I figure I have a 50/50 chance. I'm just happy to have a back up plan. Dropping off my paperwork to MTI on Monday along with a check. For once, I hope this check is going to be a waste of money and that I hear from HCC soon! Have a great weekend!
Hello everyone,
I am new here and I applied for Nursing program at SPC, planning to start taking come pre-classes this Fall but was shocked when my advisor told me that I need to have at least 3.6 GPA in order to be accepted in the program and she said that this year the avg GPA is 3.8. I earned BA from USF and MBA from NSU in 1993 and 2002 respectively so it has been a while since I was in school. I am currently working full time at a good company that paid me well for 12 years and I couldn't see advancement here. Originally, I was applied for Nursing school at SPC 2 years ago but since my mother passed away 2 months after I planning to take pre-classes then my plan had changed until recently. When I was a caregiver for my mother I really wanted to be a nurse because I know I can take better care of her but after she passed, I got really depressed and didn't continue with my original plan. I would like to ask some advice below. really appreciated the input especially from people who are taking classes right now or already graduated from Nursing School.
1) Is it possible for me to attend the nursing school part-time? My husband is not happy if I have to quit my job to attend school full time. If it's possible to go to school part-time then how long does it take? I think after 8 pre-classes then I will only have 72 credits left to take to complete the RN program.
2) Do you know if they are usually offerring evening classes for Nursing program?
3) Has anyone come across any problems while studying nursing at SPC?
4) Does anyone see a big gap in age group, or what is the oldest student that taking classes? I am 44
Thank you so much for all the advices and suggestions.
Hi snowmyst. Sorry to hear about your mother passing away. Similar to your experience, after being a caregiver for my dad and grandmother, who both passed away during the past few years, I decided I wanted to become a nurse. I’m 37 years old and just got accepted into the HCC nursing program starting this fall. Personally, I will be treating nursing school as a full-time commitment, and will probably only work one day a week while in school (and hopefully more during the summer). Many people work more because they don’t really have a choice, and I know it can be done. But if you can rearrange your budget so that you can get by with less income for a few years, it will probably help you get better grades so that you can get into the nursing program you choose. Since I knew that getting into the nursing program at HCC was so competitive, I talked it over with my husband and we decided that I should cut back on the number of hours I worked so that I could actually read through the textbooks and study (not just cramming before tests). I managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA, but I know a lot of other smart and dedicated students who had to work full-time, care for young children, etc., and couldn’t study as much as I did (and that’s probably why they had slightly lower GPA’s). I told my husband that if I didn’t get all A’s on the prerequisites, I might not get into the nursing program. He reluctantly accepted it when, instead of spending time with him in the evenings, I shut myself up in my room memorizing anatomy and microbiology terms, etc., so that I could get those A’s.
After seeing so many people on this board who are really good students and people who deserve a chance to go to nursing school getting rejected because of the limited number of seats, I would highly recommend that you take your time with the prerequisite classes. Allow yourself enough time to study and digest everything so that your GPA is high enough to get into the nursing program of your choice. I don’t know anything about SPC, but HCC offers a nights/weekends nursing program. At HCC there were usually a few people in their 30’s and 40’s in my classes, however the majority of students seemed to be straight out of high school or in their mid-twenties. But don’t let your age hold you back. Maturity is a plus in the nursing field, and you should follow your dreams. I wish you the best with your goal to become a nurse.
Thanks eyoung .....I think im going to apply at phcc i just hate having to do the transcript process all over again .....are you still going to apply for spring at HCC for next year?
No, I'm going to MTI in July if my standing doesn't change from an alternate to admitted at HCC. I just want to get started with something new and really don't want to go back into the classroom again (I'm a high school teacher). My boyfriend has offered for me to go to school full time, rather than work and go to school, so I'm going to take advantage of it. I'll be an LPN by June of next year and will work for a few months prior to starting on my RN (via a bridge program at SCF, HCC or PHCC). I can't wait to become a nurse, so I'm not waiting.. :)
Fairy007, from what I understand, the bridge program's (transitional programs) GPA requirements are a little lower than the basic nursing program. I know that one person on here was accepted into the transitional program with 3.57 GPA and I also know that SCF's (formerly MCC) GPA is considerately lower than their basic program. We'll be RNs one day! :)
The rest of you.... If you hear of any alternate receiving a letter of acceptance in the next couple of days, will you post it asap? I'm dropping off my application to MTI this week (finally finished my vaccinations, ppd and mmr tests... good times) and it would be great if some acceptance letters (specifically mine :) ) are received so I don't have to write a check to MTI!
Hi everyone,
I need a little help. As orientation is on a Tuesday and a Wednesday, I need a creative (and most importantly believable) excuse to miss work for two days in the middle of the week. I know I have 'til June to come up with something, but I haven't been able to think of anything. Thanks for your help.
I counted mine and it was a lot more than 53! I counted 124... and as far as the cut off is concerned.... Wow.. I guess it went up this year! I'm excited for this fall and I'm sure you'll be with us @eyoung. I mean, a lot of people decline last minute for ALL reasons and you should be pretty high up on the list. See you guys in June!!!
When did you guys get his email?? I was accepted but haven't received any email from anyone!
