Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Hi! I got accepted to the Southshore campus. Do you know what is the hospital for the clinicals there?

NewGoalRN,

You have just completely made my day. I've been so worried about balancing a full-time job, a family and nursing school (especially with clinicals on Saturdays as I'm doing Plant City Night and Weekend) and youe me feel like it's possible. I can't thank you enough!!!!!

Tebyrd0020 - I just wanted to let you know that being in nursing school, having a family, and working full time is completely possible. I just finished my first semester at Plant City with a B and was in the same boat as you. It was hard but well worth it. I wish you the best of luck come August.

Thank you so much Blondie. I needed the positive reminder today :)!

Congrats on successfully completing your first semester, btw!

hi keebnblondie

congratulations on finishing your 1st semester! :yeah:

i too am a bit worried about working and going to nursing school but i know it is possible. if i get accepted for the spring 2011 term (based on my gpa i should) i will not only be in the nursing school but also in my final semester finishing my bachelors degree in pre-law. that is the only semester i am worried about. i am thankful because my boss will allow me to work whenever and cut back my hours as needed.

how did you like the plant city campus? what hospitals are used for plant city?

i know everyone is different when it comes to learning but how many hours did you study a week?

Aww Thanks.

@Persgirl: Thanks

If I think of anything else or come across anything else, I will post it this weekend.

Oh, get a good pedicure, manicure, get your hair done etc especially if you are in the weekend/evening class and work. I wasn't able to get another pedicure/hair appointment until Spring break and the week after then last week of class, :uhoh3:

P.S I did use the Davis Drug guide book alot. I took it to clinicals and used it to write up my drug cards.

Hello NewGoalRN!

I have enjoyed reading your posts and I am sure they are very helpful for everyone!

I am applying for the Spring 2011 term and am not to worried about getting in based on my GPA, but you never know...

I do have a question for you... I took AP I three years ago and AP II and Micro two years ago -- by next Spring it will of course be even longer. Should I be rereading and going over my AP book while I play the waiting game? I did well in these classes but like everything you tend to forgot stuff.

????

i loved the plant city campus. originally i wanted the dm campus but now i'm glad i got pc. you have the option of south florida baptist & lakeland regional for clinicals.

all of our tests fell on a tuesday, so i honestly, i only spent the weekend before the test studying. however, i work in the medical field so i was familiar with some of what we were learning.

just so you are aware, you will also have to put in additional lab and computer hours.

good luck with your future.

You should be fine. The only areas where you needed to know AP, you should remember i.e where to take an Apical pulse(around the chest area-review to see exactly where), to be able to locate the brachia/radial/femoral etc pulse, I would briefly review the respiratory system and cardiac- other than that you should be fine. You really don't have to stress about AP for NP1 but if you have time reviewing those items should give you a jump.

Review chapters 1-7 in the math book, your skills dvd i.e basic stuff- handwashing, vital signs, making a bed, bedbath, how to put on PPE etc I just reviewed these things myelf this weekend (really easy) but it will give u a jump on the first 2-3 wks of campus clinicals.

Don't stress- organization and time management is the key- don't wait for 2 nights before an exam to start- biggest help for me was listening intensely in class, asking for clarification if I didn't understand something, studying for a test at least a week before- trying to read or scan the chapters before the class( it will be impossible to do this for all the chapters but attempt for as many as you can- that way when the instructor is lecturing, the info is not new and you understand it better), getting a good nclex review book and that's it.

NewGoal or Keen, I believe both of you have stated that you attend the PC Campus. Do either of you do the night and weekend program there. If so, what time are your clinicals on Saturdays? Also, I live in NE Tampa and work in the same area. Did you experience issues with commuting and getting to class on time (I work at Moffitt and am afraid I'm going to run into issues trying to get to class on time since i'll be leaving directly from here). Sorry for being such a worry wart :uhoh3:. Thank you again for all of your help though :)!

I attend the DM weekend/nights programa and I live and work in Brandon so can't help u much- i would leae work at 4pm and get to schoola t around 4:45 for 5pm class- when i left at 4:30pm i would always be late and arrive at 5:15pm.

what time do u get off?

Tebryd

I did the day program but I would say to give yourself an hour to get to PC if you are leaving Moffitt at 5:00. I'm a worry wart too so ask all the questions you want.

Are u doing any type of review in preparation for Process 2 in September?

New Goal RN

We were already warned that we better know our drugs so I am working on that right now. Also, I am really working on fluids and electrolytes b/c I didn't do so great on that test. How about you?
