Hi I'm new and want to know about NET

Published

Hello future coworkers!

I am 40 years old and in my local community college for the ADN program for my RN. I intend on going on for my BSN or MSN degree thereafter. I have been married to my wonderful sweetie for 18 years and we have two children, ages 10 & 14. My oldest, Emily, was a premie and was only 2 lbs and 4 oz. She was in a NICU for a couple of weeks and the on to a stepdown unit to feed and grow. She is beautiful and healthy and in all advanced classes.

All of the jobs I've ever held outside of my home have been in a hospital. I was a nurses aid, a registration clerk, and a data processor. When my daughter was in the NICU, I was very inspired by the NICU nurses and said that if I ever had the opportunity to get a career for myself, that's what I'd like to do.

Well, that opportunity has come. I am in my 2nd semester of prenursing courses. I have a 4.0 GPA so far. I even got an A in Microbiologn and it was so hard being out of school for 20 years. But I LOVE school. I wish I had not waited all these years!!! Oh, anyways, I've still got time to make a difference right?

Can anyone here please tell me what I can expect on the NET which I will be taking in November at my school. A fellow classmate gave me a NET study guide by David Frost, but the students say that it is only helpful to a small degree.

Any info you can provide is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi- I took the NET a couple of weks ago. The math is very similar to the math in the study guide. We were given an hour to complete 60 problems. It was plenty of time.

There were also questions concerning grammar ,sentence structure, as well as spelling.

I was suprised that I found the reading test the most difficult. We were given two articles and 30 minutes to answer 60 questions. The reading material was extremely wordy and BORING! Questions asked were questions concerning main idea, inferences, theme, etc. my advice is to watch the time because it is better to answer all of the questions than to skip questions, even if the questions that you answered were wrong.

I did great on the math- I found it very easy, and okay on the reading but I definitely could have done better. In fact I asked if I could take it over but the interviewer said they were fine.

Good Luck!

Kim

I took the NET last Fall, and found it very gratifying. I have not had a math class in years (!), and the functions required on the NET I took were quite basic: figure percentages, ratios, simple math. The test was mostly math, with some reading comprehension.

Not to worry; brush up on basic contemporary math and you should do well!

When we took the NET we had to write an evaluation on our results. I remember the only thing that was a little below normal was my reading speed. You had to read a page and then push a button when you were done. I wasn't asked any questions on what I read, I could have cheated and pushed the button earlier ;) My school doesn't use the NET for entrance purposes. You take in once during your prereq theory class and again during your first semester to see if you improved on the things you should have worked on.

I too was very nervous about the NET test. I'm 31 and haven't been in school for years. I used my daughter's high school Algebra text book and studied for weeks. I took the test this morning and ..... PASSED with flying colors!! I am so relieved. Probably did not need to study as hard as I did - the test was not as bad as I anticipated. Don't get me wrong, some areas of the math would have been a disaster had I not refreshed my studies, but all in all the test was allright. I scored much higher than I anticiapted and am now officially accepted to start in September. WOO HOO!!! Good luck to you! :)

I am nervous about taking the NET too. The first part of June I am suppose to get the notice of the time and Date ..it was great to read that some of you didnt find it as difficult as you feared .. I am 49 and besides the quick 3 week CNA course I havent been to school since the early 70's.

I took the NET last February for August '05 admission to nursing school. I found the actual test to be very similar to the study guide you reference. I can tell you from my observation that the students who did not use the official study guide (by Frost & Jarvis) didn't do all that great on the test.

There's really only a few simple algebra problems on the math portion of the test, and most of the rest is either basic math (add, subtract, mutiply, divide - whole numbers, decimals and fractions) or conversions (decimals, fractions and percentages) - just like you see in the study guide. As a back-up, I used http://www.math.com - it's not perfect, but it was helpful to test my math skills.

The reading comprehension portion of the test is, again, very similar to the pre-tests in the book. If you are scoring high on the pre-tests, you shouldn't have any problem with that part of the NET.

Probably the best advice I can give you for test day is keep an eye on the time. I seemed to have plenty of time for the math portion, but had to hurry to finish the reading comprehension portion. Seems like it's 60 minutes to answer 60 questions, which doesn't give you much time to go back through the text and verify an answer.

Anyhow, hope this gives you another perspective on the NET. Good luck! ;)
