HH Job interview tomorrow - Tips please!

Hi!

I have a Home Health and Hospice interview tomorrow. I would really like to land this job, as I have been out of work for over a month now.

I think I have done a lot to be prepared:

- Checked my background, no felonies!

- Double-checked with my last employer that I have rehire status.

- Have a list of 10 different working references who I have confirmed will give me a good reference.

- Have a list of all my credentials in order, including dates and ID numbers.

- Read up on the job. Everything listed are skills I have either done or have similar skills in, except for the documentation. (I have never worked with Oasis.)

- Have a nice, clean interview suit and healthy, fit appearance.

What more do I need? What more should I do?

Are there any HH nurse managers who could relay some interview advice or tips on how to stand out as the one to pick for the job?

You sound ready to go! Bring a copy of your resume, even though HR may have forwarded it to the interviewing manager. It will make you look that much more prepared, and will impress the manager. Be confident, eat breakfast, lay off the caffeine, and be relaxed. Say that you are excited about the opportunity, give a firm handshake but don't be overbearing. Be genuine, and let your references speak for themselves.

The thing that impresses managers the MOST is knowing that you have done your homework in regards to the facility/hospital. When it comes time for the manager to say, "what questions do you have for me?", ask questions that you already know the answers to. I know this sounds horrid, but I come from a long line of lawyers, and this is run of the mill strategy. The manager will immediately know that you have taken a personal interest in the company and this strategy will leave a subliminal message that you are already locked in on what is going on in the facility. Ask about what type of patients you will be caring for, what region you will be expected to serve and who your contacts will be. Ask about the docs who are contracted with the facility and what the normal operating routine is like. Don't forget a very basic human condition is that people love to talk about themselves, so pose your questions as open-ended.

I just bailed a HH position--the Medicare requirements and associated paperwork are starting to impact patient care. But here are some questions for the interview:

1. What are the productivity expectations as a new hire and after you have been there for a year?

2. What is the expectation of you when they become short staffed?

3. What continuing education do they offer?

4. When will they begin using point-of-care documentation (using laptops) rather than reams of paper?

5. Is your pay based on # pts seen or are you salary (REALLY important if you need a steady, reliable paycheck)?

6. Ask about the performance improvement plan?

7. Ask about the support you can expect if you are asked to perform a procedure that you are not comfortable with (you don't want them to require you to go alone and perform nor do you want to be penalized for asking for help)?

8. Are there LPNs on staff, or does the company plan to hire LPNs in the future (My company, Gentiva, started hiring LPNs to do the routine visits, leaving RNs to do Start of Cares and more complex visits--might sound good, but it makes for a hard day and disrupts the patient relationships we previously enjoyed)?

Interview done! It sounds good so far. I get to do a "ride-along" next week, and if HR is okay with moving forward, I think I might have a new job!
