HESI Entrance Exam- West Coast University

Published

Hi everyone,

I wanted to update everyone on my experience with the HESI Entrance Exam at West Coast University- Anaheim, CA location.

After attending the information session, I chose to not schedule for the HESI right away. Instead I called the school back to schedule for a month or two later. I wanted to be sure that I can be able to study before going into this exam. At registration, we were told we only needed to study the Reading, Vocabulary, and Mathematics, and Grammar. What a relief that was to not have to study for the Chemistry, Biology, and Anatomy section. The school gives you a book to study for but you must return it by a week or two. Therefore, I went ahead and bought the "HESI ADMISSION ASSESSMENT EXAM, EDITION 3" BY SANDRA UPCHURCH at a local Barnes N Noble. This is the exact same book as the one the school was going to let me borrow. I must say that this book is amazing. If you actually take the time to read and study page by page and do every single sample tests and quizzes, you will definitely pass. I haven't been in school for a while and this book definitely refreshed my memory and I even learned a lot.

The first time I took the HESI I failed by 2 points. Reason: I went to take the exam when I was sick, so therefore I got really tired and was really weak. This is the wrong decision to do. The first time I took the HESI, I would definitely say it was not that bad. Only because that book really helped and I really REALLY studied. The math on the HESI is all in that book. Everything you need to know. Not all of the Vocabulary in the book was all on the exam, but study it anyway. It might just pop up the time you take it. The English is definitely a bit tricky. Please do not skim through it. Actually read it. Most of the answers are in the passage. I passed with flying colors on the 2nd time I took the HESI. However, for some reason I felt that the second time that I took the HESI, it was definitely ALOT harder than the first time. Every section felt different and it definitely took me a while to finish it. At West Coast University, you only get two tries so I definitely did not rush the second time.

I do want to give you a few tips that I would suggest you do and so that you DON'T have to take it the second time.

  • Reschedule for your test if you are not feeling well. (I tried to hold in alot of my coughs so that I won't bother other students, my head was hot, and I was getting a runny nose)

  • STUDY THE BOOK!!! Take a month if you have too, then schedule for your test (Study EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK. Math- Mostly all are on the exam, VOCAB- I actually studied every term in that book. I remembered them all. Buy yourself flashcards. READING- Read the entire passage. I googled and took a lot of practice exams online, same for GRAMMAR.
  • TAKE READING FIRST- West Coast University allows you to choose what subject you want to take first. I would recommend taking the READING first because it is a lot of reading to do. If you take it last, you will already be tired from all the hours of sitting there and not focus as you should be. Also try to take some critical thinking tests online. Here are some websites I used: http://www.majortests.com/sat/grammar.php
http://www.readtheory.org (this is my favorite because they don't let you move on to the next level if you don't pass.)
  • TAKE VOCABULARY SECOND- That way the Vocabulary terms are still in your head.

  • TAKE THE GRAMMAR THIRD- You can take this first, but some questions are common sense. For instance: My mom ____ to the store. a)go b)going c)went d) are going. But you will definitely be surprised how many wrong answers you can have even if English is your first languages so do practice tests online. I just googled anything.

  • TAKE MATH LAST- Take the math last. Only because if you really did the practice exams in the book, then you have had a lot of practice. You are also able to use a calculator on the exam. And second, you don't need to remember anymore long medical terms :) Also, if you are still having some problems with some math, visit this site. They give you step by step on how to find the answer: http://www.webmath.com

I hope that you all can find this a little helpful before taking your HESI. The test isn't that bad, it's actually something you learn throughout middle school to high school. I also hope you all pass the first time. Good luck!

Ok thanks alot. I took my exam too @west coast university today. I passed the cut off point they need. On the other hand, i didn't get up to 80% on the cumulative English score as needed in some other schools I will be applying to in july.. I am so sad and really depressed because I studied alot for two weeks just that grammar and vocab are my biggest problem. I really need help in those sections. Please any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Thaw great!. How is school going for you ?. I plan on taking the Hesi in a few month!.

Thank you for this post it was very informative. I am taking the Hesi test in about a week. English has always been a subject Iv'e felt comfortable with, but after reviewing the book i'm not so sure about the grammar section. :/

With the 80% you got at west coast, was that enough to get in?

@janeldowdell nope wasn't enough for the school I was applying to. I had the skip getting in this spring, I took again last November and passed like extremely well. I have been accepted for the fall program to the school I wanted to go to before. infact I ranked number 1 out of 200 applicants that applied. Am happy to start the program.Goodluck everyone and if you have any questions feel free to ask me

How many entrance exams do you need to take to get in to west coast? is it just the HESI? and what book should i buy for advance study? thanks.

Hi, I have plan apply into school locate at Dallas, Texas. Will the HESI test the same with other location. How can we study and register for the test. And we can take the test online on Covid time. Thank you.
