You may recall I had a post asking what 5 drugs YOU administer daily (link to orignal queston), here are the results.

Out of over 100 post, here are the top 5:

1. Dilaudid

2. Insulin

3. Morphine

4. Heparin

5. zofran

Next five:

6. Metoprolol

7. Tylenol

8. Colace

9. Protonix

10. Ativan

Most unique answers were a popcicle, a can of whoop A$$, and diaper cream. Ha, you guys are great!

So for all us aspiring nurses, we better read up on these. Thanks everyone who posted. Any additional comments are welcome!

Are any of these basically the same thing?

Very cool! I'm taking my pharm class now, so I'll be sure to pay extra attention to these. Thanks!

Are any of these basically the same thing?

Nope. The closest would be dilaudid and morphine--both narcotic meds., usually for pain. However, dilaudid is much stronger than morphine.

lol at the can of whoop a$$. I give all over those medications daily. Seems like tylenol is the most common prn I get asked for. That or "I need a lax! I haven't gone since yesterday!":)

Hmmmm .... being an LPN on our cardiac rehab floor working night shift (2300 to 0700 ... only 8 hr floor in the hospital, dangit!!!), my top 5 would likely be, in no particular order:

Levothyroxine

Omeprazole

Heparin

Oxycodone

Hydrocodone ..... these last 2 mostly prn, but a LOT of them.

..... never realized how many folks take thyroid meds until entering this profession...

6-10 I give on a daily basis to probably at least half of my patients.. and I would defiantly have to add Hydrocodone (of multiple strengths) and Tylenol to my list, Some days I feel like all I do is pass out PRN pain meds.

1. Dilaudid

2. Insulin

3. Morphine

4. Heparin

5. zofran

6. Metoprolol

7. Tylenol

8. Colace

9. Protonix

10. Ativan

Those are the only ones on that list I give regularly, and the Tylenol WAY more than the Zofran. My top meds are:

Tylenol/Ibuprofen

Albuterol

Atrovent

Prednisone

Oxygen

i have to share a funny (now anyway!) story. my husband had foot surgery the week before christmas.

he was sent home with a scrip for oxy, which our pharmacist neighbor delivered on his way home. (it's a very very small town.) he took one and went to bed and fell asleep. next morning, he took our dog out and put him on the run. when i heard the dog bark, i suddenly realized it had been an hour. he was asleep standing up. later in the week, he ran a quick errand and didn't come back for long enough that i was becoming very concerned. just then, the phone rang. the police noticed him -- snoring on the bench in front of our grocery store! they brought him home. one drove the cruiser and the other his car. no citation or warning. thank g*d!

that was the end of his driving that month and of his taking oxy. his comment? "i don't know why anyone would want to take that stuff anyway."

I give most of those regularly- never give tylenol or heparin, and only very rarely give colace though.
