Hello! My name is Jeff and I am a new grad Certified Respiratory Therapist:smokin: and I have had difficulty in finding a job. I did get a job with a registry but have not gotten a single hour even though I call every week. I went back to every hospital that I have done clinicals at and spoke with the director of the RT department and given them a copy of my resume and even though I've received stellar reviews from all of my clincal sites, no one seems to be hiring.
I have 3+ years in the acute care setting (mostly ER, Tele, and L&D) as a Health Unit Coordinator (secretary) and want to get my RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) and my NPS (Neonatal Pediatric Specialist) credentials but cannot afford to until I get an RT position. I realize that this is more of a site for RN's, CNA's, and LPN's but I figured I would post and see if anybody here would be able to help me out with any suggestions, recommendations or referrals :bowingpur. Thanks!

you should call select healthcare directly and speak to the hr person. they use registry rt's all the time and i'm sure that they could hire you. i'm an rt also, i'm not the posted user name. i work as prn at good sam. i do get all my hours, but for people that want overtime, it's not there anymore except for on the weekends. i'm sure that the economy will get better within the year. my husband who is the username on this site graduated as a nurse in august of 08 and he just barely found a job at select in jan. i feel sorry for you and others that are going to school, work very hard to pass clinical, get a degree, and can't find a job. i do know that there are allot of programs even for nursing now at most tech schools. my hubby went through a com. college and people from tech schools have every advantage at landing a new grad rn job as people from the maricopa colleges, because they all have an associate’s degree. you are considered a new grad rt. but i think you're having a hard time right now because of the economy.
try springdale, select, atriligie, hacienda, plaza, promise healthcare-nursing care facilities and the va hospital.
Thanks for the tips I will give that a try but I looked on the websites and did not see any RT positions I do agree with you about the economy thing tho, hopefully it picks up soon because once summer hits it's gona be even more difficult to get a job especially as a new grad!

Problem is that a hospital is not going to offer anything to you, a registry is only acting as the middleman since you do not have any experience. Same thing as for nurses. No reputable agency is even going to offer anything since they know that they cannot place the nurse.
Hosptials want to see experience, as a new grad, you do not have any. Only the trainings that you did in school and these do not count.
Definitely look directly as a hospital, at least to gain the experience that you need. I worked for more than 14 years in the Phoenix area and never once did you see an RT thru an agency that did not have at least a couple of years of experience under their belt. Same holds true now. And even more so since things have become more specialized.
Best of luck to you.
The number of RTs needed per shift is much less than the number of nurses as well.

always willing to give respiratory a hand...
check out [color=#0000cc]advance for respiratory care practitioners for job positings and career fairs that may be in your area. health care facilities are in a belt tightening mode right now, difficult for many professsions to land that initial hospital position.
look at ltac: long term acute hospitals and vent dependent snf facilites too.
Thanks for the suggestions NRSKarenRN, and everyone else I have looked at the websites for Springdale, Select, Atriligie, Hacienda, Plaza, Promise healthcare-nursing care facilities and the VA hospital like Paulio suggested but I didn't see any openings
Luckily I still have my Health Unit Coordinator job at Shea so Im gona pick up hours here and also take ACLS, PALS, and NRP while I patiently wait for a position to open up somewhere. I would like to take my RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) exam but I don't have the 400 dollars necessary to take it. Even though I don't have my RRT I think I would look better to a potential employer with my CRT and ACLS, PALS, and NRP versus a new grad that just has an RRT.
There is a potential light at the end of the tunnel! My friend works at Boswell as a EKG tech and says they are coming off of the hiring freeze next month! I had a rotation there and I feel I developed an excellent rapport with the staff and supervisors. They were all impressed with my ability to take a full work load even while working full time nights. I pulled 6 12hour shifts a week for 2 months straight half of them were night shift for work and the other half was day shift for clinicals. I would like to work at Boswell because everyone seemed friendly and they allow RT's to do alot there ie; A-lines, balloon pumps, as well as helping in the OR during open hearts.
Also I hear Del Webb is opening a new tower and my mom has a good working relationship with the director or RT there and I also had a clinical rotation there and received a stellar review from them.
Also Tbird is also coming off of the hiring freeze approx next month according to a friend of mine. I had a rotation there as well and also received a stellar review there as well. In addition to that I also used to work there for 3 years in Tele as a HUC/monitor tech and ER registration. The only thing that worries me about Tbird is that I was fired for poor co pay collections ( but I am eligible for rehire just not as a Er Registrar which is cool because I hated that job anyway, I guess I'm not that good at hitting up sick people for money , I did love the ER though)
So I'm just gona pray and hope and wait patiently for the day my badge says Respiratory Therapist and then I will finally be able to eat the fancy ramen noodles that come in the cup!

If you work at Shea it should be easier for you to get into an open position. Have you spoken to their RT director! I hope so.

Get experience first before you start worring about baloon pumps and open heart....
I have tried to speak with the director briefly after my shift (I work nocs) but she seemed kind of busy but I have gotten really cool with alot of the RT's and they are trying to help me get in. I am gona go and talk to her a little bit later after shift change because one of the RT's introduced me before but it was shift change and a little busy. I check the intranet because they post the jobs there first but I havent seen anything in 2 months:cry:
My school told me that Kingman Regional medical center is hiring but man I dont want have to go all the way to Kingman to pursue my passion but if thats what it takes then I'll do what I got to do.
Oh great news you guys I got a job at Scottsdale Osborn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am super happy unfortunately its PRN for now but I am sure that once they see my passion and enthusiasm for patient care I am sure that they will want to offer me a full time position.
I will be working night shift 3 12hour shifts per 2 weeks at Shea as a Huc and then 3 12hour day shifts per pay period at Osborn:banghead:. Which may be a little difficult but I wanted to work during the day shift because I figure it would increase my chances of making a good impression as well as getting on a personal basis with the Respiratory big wigs there by increasing my chances of getting a full time position.
I wish I could quit HUCING but I have to keep doing it in order to keep my benefits plus I will have a stable income in case I get called off at Osborn but I am just soooo happy to have the opportunity to do what I love and actually get paid for it!
Even though I will be working night shift and day shift and driving 45 miles one way to work, I consider it a small price to pay in order to pursue my passion! I just want to thank everyone for your help and support and good vibes. I would also like to send good vibes out to everyone that is still looking for a job and tell them to just hang in there and keep trying!
