Help for Psych NP student

Hello all,

I’m a PMHNP student who failed the last quarter prior to graduation and was going to re-take the same class this November. I am in need of a preceptor in the Detroit, Michigan area and any help will be much appreciated. I am required to do 144 hours which is divided into 11 weeks, amounting to roughly 2 days for 9 weeks. Hopefully, someone from the community can help me with this as well as guide me in my journey into becoming a competent Psych NP. Thank you in advance.

If your school is CCNE accredited they should be providing preceptors for you as of January 2019. If you are struggling to find placement I'd really put the pressure on your program.

@verene - can you tell me more about this? I didn't realize there was a new CCNE rule or decision that affects PMHNP preceptor selection. Thank you.

While I personally attended a program which provides vetted clinical sites and preceptors to students, many PMHNP programs (and NP programs in general) have historically not provided preceptors/clinical placements and left this up to students. This has resulted in many students who have not been able to secure placements resulting in delayed graduation or dropping from programs. Challenges with clinical sites and lack of program oversight is likely a contributing factor to the high degree of variability in student preparedness for practice on graduation.

To address the problems associated with lack of program oversight of clinicals and inadequate sites resulting in delayed graduation rates and high attrition rates the Sawyer Initiative proposed school responsibility for adequate clinical sites and quality clinical experience for their students be part of the CCNA accreditation guidelines. This initiative passed in 2018 and is applied to CCNE certification criteria as of Jan. 1, 2019.
