Published

I guess i wasn't paying attention during this part of class but i have a test tommorow, and heres a practice question i was given.

"Elixir of Tylenol grv by mouth 3 times a day is ordered and it is available 160mg per 5ml."

I would normally know how to do the problem but i dont know what "grv" means.

EDIT:

YEAH!!!! WHOOOO HOOOOO!! Thanks! Now i have the answer its 9.375mL!!!!! THANKS RN4NICU!!!!

I'm kinda nervous because i have to make a 90% on the drug calculation test tommorow! ugh..i have 3 chances to pass then thats it. *_*

grv (gr. V) is 5 grains

That should help :)

good heavens, they are still teaching apothecary measures????? and since they are, that should have been gr v.......

We have a doc who still writes scripts with grains. I hate doing the math.

elixir of tylenol grains v (5) by mouth 3 times a day is ordered and it is available 160mg per 5ml

dose desired
: 5 grains 3 times a day

dose on hand
: 160 mg/5 ml

conversion factor
: 60 mg = 1 grain

5 ml/160 mg
(dose on hand)
x 5 grains
(dose desired)
x 60 mg/1 grain
(conversion factor) =
9.375 ml/day
which i would round to
9.4 mls
and draw up in a 10cc syringe for accuracy.

there are links to drug calculation tutorials and conversion charts that you can print out listed on post #3 of this sticky thread on the general nursing student discussion forum

Thanks for the tip,

I am an Australian nurse and when I last nursed in the USA (almost 7 years ago) - I got slammed with a grain of morphine? In Australia we are metric and I did not have a clue what this order even meant. I finally worked it out, took an hour to figure the equation out.

"grv" is an unacceptable abbreviation by dingbat's standards. Its simply an unacceptable order.
