Help a New Nurse Out!

Published

I am graduating this Summer and got offered a New Grad position at my local peds hospital, however it is on a medical acute floor. In my gut I know it is not the position I want or will be happy in since my dream job is being a NICU nurse. I applied to the NICU in the same hospital but they never got back.  I accepted the job offer is because I love the organization and I get to be a peds nurse. I have been warned by my advisors and professors (many of which work in the NICU or at the organization) to find another offer in the NICU because transferring in after a year of being on another unit is hard with little to no hope. Do I stay with the job offer and keep my eyes open for NICU new grad positions that are very very limited in my area or do I give it up all together? I feel guilty taking a position that someone will be over the moon with and it is my only job offer so far. I am conflicted. Any advice will be helpful.

I am a preceptor on a trauma/stepdown unit. If you have a chance to get a peds position in the hospital where you want a NICU position, then get your foot in the door. We get many nurses who want to work in an ICU setting but as a new grad, they are not ready at the end of their orientation and end up somewhere else.

I would get peds med/surg experience for at least a year and then look for a NICU position. I don't understand why people are telling you that it is difficult to transfer from one unit to another in the same hospital. Where I am, it is easier than coming in cold.
