Help! New BSN grad moving to Houston

I work at Texas Children's, and my nurse educator told us that there is a hiring freeze. Unfortunately, I think that might be the environment at most of the hospitals.

Try Methodist, St. Luke's, and Hermann- then try some of the suburb hospitals. The honest answer is that March is kind of late to be applying so you might not get the specialty you want- but I do know that Methodist has at least two GN positions that are still listed. Good luck- it is tough!

Hermann's applications closed off in early Feb, I think. But sometimes, you may be able to come in as a NLN and get an orientation without the classes. Doesn''t happen on all the units. St. Joseph's usually hires pretty late into the season, though. Smaller hospital, but still fairly nice.

You should still check the website and apply to every place you want to work. The previous posters are right in that it is probably too late. The Med Center is very competitive and take their applications early. All my friends graduating in May have applied and a few have had their interviews. Even the people who got interviews aren't being hired because of the freeze. Good luck to you!

Take a look at the Harris County Hospital District. They have two major hospitals, one in the medical center and one north of the medical center. They have the 5th largest trauma center in the US. I am almost sure that they are hiring. They always are. I worked for HCHD for many years and the work was hard, but I loved it. I learned more there than any other place I have worked. You will have to work to get an interview however and it is a slow process. Human resources there works at a snails pace.

I took a look around on some of the sites and found a bunch of vacant positions with the Harris County Hospital District... med surg, ED, clinic positions. I also found a number of positions available at The Methodist Hospital in the medical center. They have hospitals outside the medical center also. I found positions there as well. I did not find ANY positions at MD Anderson. I used to live in Houston and have worked at a lot of the hospital there. I will help you if you need to know anything about a certain hospital if you need info.

I found out last week why a lot of places in Houston aren't hiring. Last year when Ike came through and tore up Galveston all the UTMB nurses came up to Houston and took a lot of the open RN positions. The hospitals which had been short are now filled with nurses. Of course they're not completely filled, there is still a shortage, but they are not all jumping at the bit to hire new grads. It's hard for everybody. Less than 10% of my class graduating in May with our BSN have jobs lined up. Everybody is freaking out. Hospitals I know friends have interviewed with but are put on hold due to hiring freezes: MD Anderson, Methodist. Also Texas Children's does not typically hire new grads. They may sometimes hire students who have been working there via work study but very, very rarely straight out of school. (Like never.) You're not alone! Just keep trying!
