Published

I am an LVN in Los angeles, ca area. I graduated in 2004. I got married, raised a chlild and now would like to start working. I have never worked as an LVN and the only experience I have is when I did clinical during 2004 in school. I have been interviewed for jobs in med surg in the hospital, snf and more and they will not hire me due to lack of experience. They tell me to get experience and then they will hire me. hey give me that look of hopelessness and me being useless. I called my school for help and they simply will not return my calls. It has been a month trying to reach them. My main question is.....how can I even get experience if no one will hire me. What can I do??? I am stumped! What happen to nurses can always get a job??? Someone please respond and give me advice on how to go about this. I am lost and have no more ideas. I am also close to getting discouraged. I do not want to just throw away what I have worked so hard for, my nusring license. I did not mean to take so much time off work and it just happened that way. PLEASE SOMEONE, ANYONE>>> ADVICE!!!! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE AND ADVICE IS SO APPRECIATED!!!!

I have no idea what the laws are in california but you need to check them out first. See if you need to take refresher courses. Go to your local employment office. They can help put out feelers for you. Also, try longterm care facilities. Put you application in EVERYWHERE. When the interviewer tells you to "get experience"....POLITELY ask if they have any recommendations where you could start at. Tell them that you are having a hard time finding a starting position. ALSO....go to your school. Don't call. Go to them. Find out who would be able to help you...job placement, ect. Let them see your face and set up an appointment if necessary. I don't know what else to tell you except that I have heard that California has a serious shortage. You just need to figure out where that shortage is. Even if it is at a job you don't want. If you tough it out for 6 months or better a year. The rest will come. GOOD LUCK..

Unfortunately, many parts of California do not really suffer from a shortage of LVNs. The plethora of private vocational schools are churning out new LVNs into the workforce every 3 to 4 months, which has somewhat flooded the job market. As a result, employers and hiring managers can pick and choose which applicants they wish to hire.

That is a real bummer. I guess getting into the market there is much harder than here. Maybe NEEDHELP00 could look at using this time to get the RN. Between a rock and a hard place is what it sounds like.

That's nearly four years without any working hours. How well do you truly think you remember your skills and meds?

Go to the school you graduated from, ask about a re-entry programme and take it if they offer it.
