HELP!!! I am a kinesthetic learner!

Published

I need a lot of tips on passing nursing fundamentals. I am a kinesthetic learner. I am passing my clinical with flying colors. But the lectures are so hard. I'm a hands on person. I just can't get my mind to wrap around these lectures. I study until I'm blue in the face and nothing great comes from it. Please give me your tips.

Me too and the best thing that worked for me was reading while walking on a treadmill. Sounds weird, but it helps engage that part of your brain. I set it on a low enough speed that I could read without difficulty but fast enough to keep me going.

I second the treadmill comment. I also doodle - adding flowcharts to notes, doodling whatever organ we were studying, etc. Or sometimes in class have a little ball of silly putty or hackey sack ball, gives you something to manipulate while you're hearing the lecture.

One of my friends was a knitter and would knit during lectures - it kept her hands moving, and she was good enough at it that she didn't have to look at her hands so she could focus on listening to the lecture.

how do you take notes and knit at the same time? :cheeky:

I read a post one time that said the more senses you use the more info you would retain. Someone suggested walking and getting a squishy ball or a ball with little spikes on it so you could hold that in one hand and the papers in the other. I haven't tried it, but I did try walking while studying but was too worried about falling off. lol I will pace back and forth upstairs in my study area and it seems to work better for me:)

Hi there,

Ask your instructor if can record the lecture and then listen to it as your walking. I listen to mine as I commute, walking the dog or walking across campus. It is incredible how much more I hear the second time around. Good luck!

They don't, they listen and retain because doing something (knitting/walking/whatever) engages another part of your brain that can help some people retain the information. Or the lectures will reinforce information learned from reading/pre-class activities. Some of the people with the highest grades in my class are knitters

most adults learn by doing. I recommend you google adult learning styles. There are several

Thanks Every one for all your tips. I am going to try them all. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to pass. Lately i did find my self walking around the house while reading and cleaning at the same time, so i think that might be helping me. i'm excited to try these tips in class. that's my main problem. i'm sitting in one class from 8am to 4pm and it kills me. i'm always tapping my foot or waving around my pen. now i'm glad my grandmother taught me how to knit so maybe i could use that. :) lol.

I find recording the lectures helpful

I am somewhat similar. My notes are written/drawn in a sketchbook because that is how I learn. They would be of little help to anyone else. I tried a notebook but gave up on those years ago. And I rarely ever need to check the notes again, either, as I tend to retain information that way with little to no studying.

I guess she had really good memory and didn't need them?? ;) I don't know, but it worked for her!
