Ok, I know that all the new grads are in the same boat as I am. I have applied everywhere, I kid you not (with the exception of Bronx). You name the hospital or nursing home, I have put in my resume and cover letter to them (and that's if they're taking BSN RN's). I have emailed, telephoned, contacted and networked through people I know and yet, only a few responses and interviews. The job search is awful. I think it's bad, but the shutdown of two Brooklyn hospitals has made the job search horrendous.:uhoh21: :(

Literally, the search feels like this: :smiley_ab :yldhdbng:

Feel free to share your slow job experiences and yes, successes too please! Ranting and raving welcome.

I feel ya. I live in Florida and am trying to move back to New York, posting a resume with a Florida address is even worse!!! Hospitals can't be on hiring freezes forever... good things come to those who wait, right? ;) Hang in there.

I feel your pain! I graduated in May with a BSN, got licensed in NJ and NY and am jobless. Let's not give up though. They'll have to give in to us new grads at some point, we just hit the job scene at a bad time. Can others post where they are hiring new grads to give us hope ??!?!

Thank you Gauze and HappyBSNRN for your encouragement. This is true. I am sure you guys will find jobs eventually. Persistance is key. I heard that:

(1) in-house referrals are the things that are getting new grads in the door

(2) To keep applying to the hospitals and keep your name in their application system

(3) If you call the hospital, ask to speak directly to the nursing recruiter

Anyone heard different? Happy, you must have paid an arm and a leg for the NCLEX and licensure in two states!

Anthony and NYDreamer, thank you for the references. I feel as though I'm exhausting my resources, but things are still coming up, which is good.

Till I find a job, I will be :typing

I feel your pain. I graduated in December 2008, passed the NCLEX in March 2009, have sent my resume to tons of hospitals in NYC and haven't heard anything. Right now I'm going to look into clinics. WE are all in this together hopefully we'll get something soon.

I hear you Grilla.

Well, good news and bad news. Good news is I had 5 interviews w/in a week w/ nurse recruiters. Two with hospitals, one with staffing firm linking me to home health care, one nursing home, and one about VA nursing jobs.

Bad news is, it's been 2-5 days and I haven't heard from the nurse managers. This is frustrating.

I've sent emails to the recruiters, talked to the recruiters on the phone (70% of them), sent letters to most of the recruiters at the hospitals I want to work at, applied online at the hospital websites, and went PERSONALLY to the hospitals to ask to speak with the nurse recruiters.

Advice: Good idea to apply to nursing staffing firms, nursing homes, home healthcare, hospitals, etc. And use all the search engines necessary. I am on at least 22 different sites where I'm putting in job information (i.e. careerbuilder, monster, onward health careers, nyp hospital system, etc.)

I don't know what else to do really. Rejection sucks, but I REFUSE to give up.

Rejection sucks but it won't kill us. Take it as a learning experiece.

I got a call back from a clinic and interviewed with the recruiter today. It's for a GI clinic in Bklyn. Looks promising :)

Even though the pay is less than in a hospital I need to start paying off my student loans.

5 interviews? Wow. I am sure you will hear from at least one of them, give it a little more time. That's awesome that you were able to get so many interviews!

I like your positive attitude. Don't give up, you will get something!

Thats great to get 5 interviews. I would keep following up with the recruiters to let them know you are still interested in the jobs. They will hopefully let the managers know you are persistent and you want to work for them. Something will come up. I finally got a part-time job in a hospital. And persistent follow-up was key! I wish you all the best in your hunt!

I graduated in August of 2008 with a BSN and I'm jobless. New grads are backing up - This downturn got bad in Oct 2008 but now it's worse. Up until this spring nursing homes were hiring. Now they seem not to be. Hang in there everyone - things have to get better. I'm writing a letter and sending it to NYS and city elected officials. I have noticed there are plenty of nurse manager jobs and jobs requiring 3 - 5 years experience. If they can't hire and train new nurses where do they think all these experienced nurses will come from in the next decade? The shortage will come back with distastrous consequences. I don't think the industry as a whole realizes that they haven't handled new grad to first job transitions very well in the past and that needs to change. Anyhow, remember, you aren;t alone. There are a lot of waiting for a break in this economic tide. Hang in Nurses! - Durable

I grad the same time as you also with a BSN. It really doesnt make a difference now that they ONLY want experience nurses. Have you try applying to hopsitals in upstate or consider relocating? I got my job in med-surg in a really nice small hospital 4 hrs from nyc. People there are willing to train and very helpful. Its a great learning environement. The money is not as good as in the city but you gain good experience and money to pay a few loans. There are places that are willing to hire, but you just have to go to them. Jobs are hard to come by in the city. I know for sure SUNY Upstate takes new grads all the time, and its a really good teaching hospital. I really hope you will find a job soon. Good luck.
