I am an RN, I live in NY and work in a hospital's hospice program, so I split my days between seeing inpatient hospice pts, and pts in their homes. I plan on moving to Virginia Beach sometime next year after my husband graduates from his Master's degree program. My family has been in Queens NY forever and in recent years, they've all moved to VA Beach, and we're pretty lonely up here without them.
As I sit and wait for my hubs to finish school, I always have my eyes on the VA job market for hospice jobs. Don't get me wrong- when I get down there, I will need a job ASAP and I'm really willing to take something temporarily in med/surg or something just to pay the bills, but my heart is always 100% hospice and can't imagine doing anything else long term. I see positions open with a place called Heartland Hospice but it seems to be like a chain/corporation of sorts... they have locations in 25 states. The hospital I work for now is pretty small, I have a caseload of about 15-20 but I know everyone involved with hospice and I like it that way. Has anyone worked for Heartland Hospice in any of its locations? How is working for this company? I'd love any information anyone may have. Thanks!

Heartland is a large for profit health system focused on home services, SNF, Rehab, etc.

I work for Heartland Hospice. It is owned by HCManorCare, who has LTC, Subacute rehab, AL, Home Care and Hospice and even out patient Pt/OT offices. How good the office is depends on how good your administrator and DPS (director of professional services, the DON) is. I work under one of the best DPS's I have ever had. The company is very compliant with Medicare guidelines and corporate audits are done at least 2 times a year to insure we are compliant with eligibility. That said, we've also had a bad director or 2 in the many years I've with them. Those were bad times. The best I can say is try to get a feel for the office when you interview. And please don't discount Heartland just because it is "for profit". There is a large "non profit" in our area who has huge turnover, doesn't supply the extras to the pts that we do (nice tab diapers, pull ups, nice absorbant chux, etc). And over the past year, we have gotten a lot of transfers from this "non profit" due to their service failures. From not providing a home health aide when the family wanted/needed them to, as one family member told me, employing the most cold hearted people the family member had ever met. Was not impressed by the office that signed me up about 15 years ago. Completed the "orientation" and still waiting for work after 15 years. Would not recommend this kind of agency to anyone. Imagine how they treated their clients!

I've never worked for Heartland but we're a small hospice company in an area saturated with hospices and competition is rough. Out of all the other hospices in this area, I've probably heard the fewest complaints about them. I know one RN who has worked for them on weekends for years and she is OKAY with her job (which is quite good if you're working for a large corp in my experience) and the CNAs that I know are quite happy there. I don't know any of the FT case managers though. We get quite a few transfers from other hospices in the area because of pt/cg discontent, but usually not from Heartland.

I work on a med-surg floor and I'm wanting to pick up a PRN job. I just applied to Heartland Hospice.. I'll let you know if I hear anything from them :)

I just recently started with Heartland PRN. I am still going through orientation but so far I like it and everyone is very supportive and helpful. I am attempting to work full time instead of just PRN now.
