Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Hi everyone. I thought I would pop in and get to know everyone. I am starting a healthier lifestyle this week. I used to work out 4-5 times a week, but somehow last semester's AP I swallowed up all of my time. I'm getting myself back into the gym and also giving in and going vegetarian ( 90% of my family is vegetarian). I needed to make a change and there is no time like the present. I want to go from Heavy living to Healthy living. :D :D :D

I wish I had the energy to go to the gym 5 days a week. Where do you work out at? Maybe you should kidnap me from school one day and force me to work out with you. HA HA.

Seriously though I am taking yoga this semester so at least I will get some exercise.

Oh, I am taking Fowler for A&P 1 this semester. Do we have any open lab times at school where you can go in on your own or are we only allowed in there during class time?

Sorry for the A&P hijack y'all. Now.... back to your regularly scheduled programs.:lol2:

Thanks Tweety!

Steph, I love popcorn too. I buy the light version in the mini packs and have them at home for snacking. You'd be surprised how little calories it has without compromising the taste!

Yeah, but on Atkins I can't have carbs . . even if low in calories.

The bad thing I do with popcorn is I put parmesan cheese on top. Lots of it. :coollook:

So far so good today - although I have a stress headache - trying to get ready to fly to So. Cal . .. arrgghhh.

I had a chicken breast cooked in vodka spaghetti sauce (9 carbs per 1/2 cup) and cauliflower.

I NEED to get back with my healthy eating and exercising plan. I think I would feel so much better and it would help with this depression. The problem I have is no motivation .... I don't know how I'll ever get started. A little at a time I guess ..... I really need to do this.

Rain, been there and done that. Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other and take the body and the mind will follow. Small steps. You don't have to be a fitness guru or have the body of Jennifer Anniston, but you have to do something. Drag yourself out of the house for the 20 minute walk no matter what it takes and see how you feel when you're done.

Thanks Tweety. You know I think I'm going to have to do just what you said ...... go for walks or something. I don't think I'll be able to start off with jogging on the treadmill 4 times a week for 30 minutes. I just have no motivation to do it, I don't think I can make myself do that. But a nice walk sounds good .... the weather is great, I might as well take advantage of it. Like you said, one step at a time ..... it's going to be slow ......

That's great Rain. As I said, just bring the body and the mind will follow. Keep focused on one day at time and watch the self-talk. "I have no motivation......I don't know how I can do this.........".

Keep it simple. "I have the motivation and I will walk for 20 minutes today and I can do that. Tomorrow will take care of itself."

Mornin' all.

Rain, Tweety has good advice. It is really hard to get motivated, but once you get started, it comes much easier. Try to find something that you enjoy and that will make it much easier. You might have to try several things before you find something, but some things are just more pleasant to others. I love to walk as well - in my small town, walking is very peaceful and serene, so it is a treat. :) If you have a vegetable you really love - try incorporating that into your daily meals too. I happen to love salad - so I eat at least one salad a day, that has seemed to help a lot. Best of luck - whatever you do, don't give up!!! ;)

Okay, I stepped on the scale this morning at it was down 3.5 lbs from yesterday. WTF?!?!? Not complaining, I suppose, but wicked bizahh (as we say up here). Probably water weight. Been good about the portion control, I think. Still need to work on establishing a workout habit. Getting the Christmas tree out of the living room should help (it's a little cramped in there at the moment and it's where I do my workouts).

Welcome, nursecadet! Glad to have you.

Tweety, it's funny how good something can taste when you're starving! :lol2: It is interesting, though, if I'm actually hungry and not just craving food as something to do, an apple or whatever tastes sooo good.

Princess74, I think that's great that they have yoga at your school. I would like to find a workout or dance class for myself, helps with the motivation factor.

Steph, have a safe trip!

Rain, baby steps. Don't try to take on everything at once. Do a little bit at first, a few stretches, a quick walk around the block. Be proud of those extra steps. Then add to them. Once the endorphins get flowing the motivation will follow. I agree with Tweety and Sarah, too... try to avoid "I can't" or "I never" statements. Replace them with more positive statements. Even if you're saying essentially the same thing... putting it in more positive terms gives you the tools to succeed! Give yourself pats on the back for the things you ARE doing well.
