Dr Oz's show on antidepressants...your thoughts?

Nurses Stress 101

Anyone see Dr. Oz's show last week on antidepressants? I normally do not watch his show but when I saw it was on this topic I tuned in. There is no doubt he is staunchly opposed to antidepressants - especially their use in women - and feels they are over prescribed. I personally felt this show along with he and his two doctor guests, did a disservice to the use of these medications and in some ways made too light of depression/anxiety and all that goes with it and what true depression really is. As someone who is struggling a LOT with anxiety issues I can say first hand that trying to go the natural route of herbs/breathing exercises etc. is barely, if at all, lifting the band of pressure and fear that seems to get larger with each passing day and the thought that even prescriptions if obtained would not provide any relief makes me feel like giving up.

I certainly agree that exercise, proper nutrition and eliminating or minimizing stress plays a part but let's be realistic..when one is fearful of leaving their house or has to use all the energy they can muster to get out of bed to shower and brush their teeth, anyone with any compassion and common sense has to agree that a multivitamin and a quick walk aren't going to happen. And most people either over or under eat and gravitate toward comfort foods when stressed or upset. It seems to me his show just perpetuated the belief that depression/anxiety are not "real" or particularity serious.

Most people I know who are on or have taken medications in the past, are glad they have access to them or are glad they did and I have seen first hand the difference meds can make and am disappointed that even within the healthcare community ignorance toward mental health is still heavily out there.

Even if they are making money from him, they most likely still don't really listen to his advice.

Within the last year or so, Dr. Oz hosted a show about the risk of stroke with antidepressants. The weird thing is, it was about MAO inhibitors. I've seen LOTS of charts and medical records, and have yet to discover a patient taking an MAOI for depression. This class of antidepressant preceded tricyclics such as Elavil...and that was a generation ago! Dr. Oz didn't mention anything about the newer classes of antidepressants. I'm not a psych nurse, but somewhere I heard that ECT would be ordered for severe depression before a trial on an MAOI because of the side effects, dietary restrictions, etc. Anyway, to demonstrate how an MAOI causes a stroke, Dr. Oz took a balloon-like tube and twisted it a couple of times, so the stressed area burst. What misinformation he disseminated to the public that day!

I have long thought Dr. Oz was a bit full of [something], but lately his eyes are getting even darker brown. jmo.

If I followed that advice I would be in the ER daily.

Me too, LOL.

But, but....he's one of Oprah's sell-outs so he must be the real thing!!!!!!!!!!

The same people that take it from celebrities. Remember the whole Jenny McCarthy and autism thing.

Yeah, I remember that. When I went to CNA classes a while back there was a mother in it who swore up and down her kid had autism due to some vaccinations they received.

Over prescribed ? What does that mean in this context? People are prescribed them who do not really need them ( do not meet DSM criteria?). Or what? Why be miserable if a pill can help , I guess? I am surprised more people are not on them. Why do so many people get so worked up over this? Diet and exercise and rainbows and sunshine may work, may not. if a pharmaceutical with billions in advertising does than what do people expect will happen ? I think the more the stigma decreases the more sales and prescriptions will go up. ( COMPLETELY ANNECDOTAL AND GUESSING) I think most doctors would be pretty willing to write a prescription for an SSRI and not question much in most pts just from my experience as a nurse, reading charts and listening to co-workers, friend's conversations.

Or did he mean overprescribed as in most of these people do not need meds for depression and are instead " feeling depressed" due to other illnesses?

I just did 30 CEUS on Depression and was surprised with some new things I learned. In order to be diagnosed with a major depressive episode one must have experienced a period of at least two weeks of a depressed mood and/or loss on interest in nearly all activities (anhedonia). I remember thinking "wow" just two weeks is all that is required.

The next thing that stuck out was a new term to me called "kindling". Kindling is a term that represents the phenomena that once an individual has a major depression they are predisposed to having future episodes.. If this depression is not treated or under-treated it may predispose that individual to a more intense more debilitating episode in the future.

The BIG message I got from this was treat early...fully treat until remission ..reinstate treatment once there is a new onset . Of course, there are those that will always need treatment with chronic depressive disorders or the bipolar ,

My teenage daughter suffers from depression and we went through hell until I got her on some medications. I think Dr Oz has done a great disservice in misrepresenting the need for early evaluation and treatment. DO not wait if you have signs and symptoms for at least 2 weeks. Teenagers and children often present differently and I personally waited too long to get my daughter help.

I've hated him since he treated nurses like dancing servants but this is just ridiculous. Along with teaching coping skills and management of problems, antidepressants save lives. They are over-prescribed to people rather than teaching them coping skills, yes, but they are helpful for almost everyone taking them. To make a blanket statement about an entire class of medications is wrong. Viagra is over prescribed too, don't see him whining about that.
