Health Professions Education Foundation Scholarship

Published

Anyone here ever applied for this scholarship or are planning on applying? When awarded, you must commit to working in a medically underserved area (MUA) hospital in California for two years upon graduation. I am applying for the Bachelor Of Science Scholarship.

Does anyone know how to find what hospitals are categorized as an MUA? I contacted someone at the foundation to ask, but she said that it constantly changes, almost daily! I am just worried when I graduate, I will have to work in a hospital I don't want to or I will get some great opportunity somewhere and not be able to work there because I am obligated to another hospital. I believe it works the same as hospital scholarships, that if you decide not to work at that hospital, you have to pay the money back. I would really prefer not to do this, and would rather know there are good MUA's out there that I can work at.

I called and they told me that you have to work at a low income area, in a hospital or clinic. These include county facilities, such as LACUSC, the sheriffs department, Public health department, etc. Hope this helps! Where do you plan on working?

Thanks for your reply!

So it includes all county hospitals? What is LACUSC? They didn't tell you there is a specific list of hospitals?

I'm going to school in San Diego, and I will most likely end up there. It's either that, or possibly the SF Bay Area. But for the most part, I'm not really sure.

I was thinking about applying for that scholarship also, but like you, I am afraid I might get stuck working in a hospital that is too far from my home. I checked on the websites and the 3 hopsitals in my city are not in the MUA category so I am pretty sure that I would have to commute to another county. And the loan is at a 10% plus $250 administration fee if you don't fulfill the requirement. But I might just do it because I need the funds for school supllies, gas etc.... And who knows maybe by the time I graduate my prefered hospitals will be on the MUA list. Good Luck.

I received $8,000 from them back in 2001 (in quarterly payments). Back then, they listed the eligible facilities on their website. Any county, state, or federal facility was eligible. I was working for LA county at the time; first at LAC+USC as a Staff RN and then as a public health nurse. They used to let you change employment as long as each facility was on their list, but I believe they've changed that. I highly recommend applying...it was very nice getting that free money!

What website do I need to go to apply?
