Is this really what it costs to an aide in Canada???? Holy moly! My CNA class in the US was $600.

If a Canadian takes a US Certified Nursing Assistant class are they able to work in Canada as an aide?

I am having a hard time finding that info online and am just wondering if someone has already looked into it?

Thanks!

That sounds ridiculously high. It's almost as much as tuition for a year of nursing school.

I thought so too! That was CDI college in Vancouver, I think Douglas college was still $3000.....that still seems awfully high when I took it here for $600 in Bellingham WA....maybe we have to see if she could do it here...I live 10 mins from the Canadian border...only 30 mins drive from my sisters!

$8000, are you sure it wasn't for a semester in a Practical Nursing program instead? That is awfully high.

Yup! Here it is for a 30 week program.

Do nursing homes offer training in Canada like they do in the US? Quite a few here will offer free training as long as you contract to work for them for a certain period of time.

Thank you for all your help!

A lot of health care regions (including all of the province of Alberta) are now insisting that personal care workers/nursing attendants/nurses' aides - whatever we choose to call them - be certified, which means formal education and standardized testing. And here in Alberta they aren't grandfathering anyone. If you aren't certified you have until a certain date to become so. A close friend is going through it right now.

I looked at Personal Support Worker programs here in Ontario and they run about $3000-3500 for 30 weeks. As Jan says, these types of programs are now regulated and have standardized testing. I know the one at a college close to me has an extensive A&P component as well as a communications segment (lots of essays). All PSWs/aides have to complete a college program now in order to find any kind of job.The PSWs that work at the same hospital as me make about $21/hr

No, it is not that easy. We have registration boards in some provinces now and there are some funding regulations that make employers hire provincially certified and registered staff. You don't have to spend $8,000 to get this qualification. I did a lot of research before I picked my college. It cost me around $6,000 and it was the most up to date curriculum. I got a job really quickly too.
