Need help getting a job

Hey everyone!

I am currently a nursing student in Hawaii and am finding it extremely difficult to get a job in the hospitals here! I would love the opportunity to get my foot in the door however so would everyone else. There is one hospital that I really have my heart set on. I look at their job postings every day and apply for every one that I am qualified for! They've called me a couple of times to ask me about my application and resume but I still haven't gotten an interview. Is there anything, besides a killer resume and cover letter, that could give me the edge I need to get that interview!?

Befriend someone (anyone) who currently works for the hospital. In this day and age, you need someone on the inside who can vouch for you and put in a good word for you.

do you have any hospital work experience? if not, you probably can't be picky about what hospital you work at or what kind of work you do. even non-nursing & entry level positions are becoming very competitive as all the new grads struggle to find work.

consider taking anything you can find, even in non-patient-care settings. every hospital has job postings that are posted internally for current employees before they are made available to the public. once you're employed, you have a greater chance of getting a NA/unit secretary job, and eventually an RN job once you've graduated.

I was hoping not to have to resort to jobs in the kitchen or even housekeeping but I am becoming increasingly aware that this may be necessary! I found out that a couple of jobs I was called about (but never for an interview) as nurse aids were given to RNs! Times are rough.

yep.

It's good you're starting now though. Puts you one step ahead of the game. You wouldn't believe how many students wait until they've graduated and taken their NCLEX to start looking for work. Then after a couple months of applying for "experienced RN" jobs & no interviews, they realize they need to get their foot in the door if they ever hope to work as an RN.

Thanks =D I need all the encouragement I can get! At this rate though, I probably won't get my foot in the door until I've graduated. Haha. Is this the same situation everywhere? In your opinion, do you think I'll have a better chance getting an RN job after I've graduated if I relocate?

Relocating is an option. Some places have new-grad specific programs like nurse residencies. It might be worth it depending on your situation. There was some talk about Hawaii starting a nurse residency program but I haven't heard much about it or how it would work. Priority might be given to those new grads unemployed for more than a year or somethin.. which doesn't help fresh new-grads much.
