I want to be a nurse

I'm pretty much in your boat. I'm 23 and only this year did I really decide that I wanted to be an RN. I also live on the windward side, I live in Kailua. Right now I'm going to KCC and I'm trying to finish my pre-req's so I can even apply. KCC has a 2 1/2 year RN program but it's super-competitive to get into. I attended one of their information sessions and every semester they have 200 people apply and they can only take 30. My younger sister (she just turned 22) just applied for the RN program and she has a 4.0 gpa and she won't find out if she got in until Thanksgiving. She goes to UH and they have about 200 students apply and they take 45 students each semester. Their program take 4 years but it's for a Bachelor's Degree. HPU has a great nursing program but it's super expensive. Oh yeah, another thing about KCC is that you have to apply a semester in advance, so for Fall admission, you'd have to apply by Dec and for Spring, you'd have to apply by June and you have to have all your pre-req's done and have taken the nursing entrance exam. Oh my god I feel like i'm never gonna get in!!! I feel discourage already cause I haven't even started in any of my prerequisites yet!!! We're leaving the island in 2006 of October to go back to Chicago and I wanted to get my nursing degree before we left the island. By the way what's KCC?

Don't be discouraged. You can always do what I am doing. I am starting LPN school in January (already took my entrance exam, got accepted and now am working on fullfilling all requirements like physical, background check, etc). I then plan on either getting my ASN through Excelsior (a distance learning program) or from a university nearby that has an LPN - RN bridge program.

It doesn't look like there are any NLNAC accredited LPN programs in HI but there is probably a program that isn't NLNAC (the main difference being that generally the NLNAC accredited schools credits transfer). I suggest doing some research on the web.
