Has anyone made their own scrubs?

I was thinking of making my own scrubs shirts, there is such cute material out there, I was wondering if anyone has made their own and if they can give out any advice. A lot of the material at craft stores is 100% cotton. This seems like it would wrinkle.

If you make your own, what material do you use? Thanks in advance, I desperately want to make a toile top!

just wanted to say that when i used to work at a chiropractor's office, a coworker of mine had her scrubs made for her by her mother, and I swear you couldn't tell the difference! She made all different colors and patterns for her. You definitely could save a lot of moolah if you could make your own. If I could remember what I was taught in Home Economics I'd make my own too. The pattern couldn't be any more simple.....hmmmm I've been thinking about taking a refresher course in sewing at the vo-tech center where I live. It's only 35 bucks for a few weeks of training.:p

My wife made me some out of material that is 100% cotton and yes they do wrinkle like crazy, so much that I have to iron them. Being male and at #200 I wear large size so it took more material and in fact by shopping online, on ebay and at sales its cheaper to buy allready made scrubs for me, that is unless the material is on sale and really cheap- takes about 2 1/2 yards for a size large.

Rj:rolleyes:

A good friend of mine made my scrub tops when I was pregnant with twins because the only ones I could find premade were drab solids. I did choose some 100% cotton, but also the 65%/35% poly/cotton blend.

There really are some simple patterns out there. If I had more time, I might try my hand at making my own, but working full time with 2 teenagers and 2 17 month olds......

The poly-cotton blend is better IMHO. Make sure you wash it first before wearing. I actually wash my fabric before I cut because of that fabric smell. I used Simplicity patterns 5443(easy) and 8351(cute neckline-not as easy).

Do make sure you back tack every stress point though, because you KNOW how much pull and grabbing we have.

Thanks for the ideas and advice, its been awhile since I have sewed, so we will see!!!

I make my wife's scrubs - after discovering the cotton wrinkling problem - out of seersucker. No ironing and it's easy to work with. The pattern is made from an old scrub shirt taken apart and traced on kraft paper and cut out with 1/2" seam allowances. The seersucker is comfortable and cool, and it self-adjusts for the five pounds her weight varies. All the new scrub patterns I've seen to buy are collarless, but the one I make has a nice v-neck collar that's easy to construct.

When i added up the time, effort, and cost of supplies, i determined that making my own wasn't any cheaper than buying them, so i would just buy (if i still had to buy my own).
