Has anyone every been told that they should slide the protective cap on an insulin syringe up just short of the lock position during the stroll to the patient, retract the cap, administer the insulin, then slide the cap all the way to the locked position? I know you are not supposed to recap needles anymore, but I always place the orange cap back on, walk to the patient, administer the insulin, then dispose of the sharp appropriately. I am reasonably sure the manufacturer does not recommend engaging the safety cap on the syringe until after administration and then engaging it fully. Just curious if anyone else had any experience with this direction.

I recap when walking to the Patients room, just recap the right way, don't use both hands slide the needle back into the cap. That's how I was taught to recap a needle.

Put the cap back on the clean needle and don't EVER recap a used/dirty needle. I would also not slide the safety into place with your fingers but use an inanimate object like the bed, etc to reduce the chance of needlestick from a used sharp.

I don't hesitate to recap sterile needles.
