I became a nurse because I knew I would have steady employment, and I would help people. I stayed in nursing because I love it. Welcome!:balloons:

hello, amerain and welcome to allnurses.com
great that you joined.
as for my motivation? i suppose my grandmother. she always wanted to be a nurse, but this was forbidden in her day. she knew i was very interested and supported my decision throughout my life.
when i was a small child, nursing was all i ever wanted to do. i have pictures of me as a small girl with my homemade dress up clothes practicing on my dolls. then, when i was older, i graduated to "working" on small animals. i always wanted to be a surgical nurse.
i then became a candy striper at one of the local hospitals and did that for 3 years before graduating highschool. entered college the youngest in my class and have never looked back.
enjoy the forums here!!!:balloons:

I was in the hospital for a week for tests (back way before insurance companies insisted tests be done outpatient) for hypertension, when I was 19. I was so impressed with the nurses and how they ran the hospital and took care of everything and everybody. It was a seed that was planted.
Years later when I was having some hard financial times, stuck in a dead end job, and had the opportunity to attend school, I was looking at the schools manual and saw they had a nursing program, and the itch that was there from when I was 19 came back and never went away. I just somehow knew that nursing was for me. I was in my early 30s then and never looked back and have no regrets. I had not idea it was a nice middle income with plenty of opportunities, but that part of the motivation to stay.
So to cut to the chase, it was the nurses while I was in the hospital that motivated me.
Thread has generated some additional interest.
Thread moved to General Nursing Discussion forum.

my choice to be a nurse was because i spent a lot of time in our local picu with my youngest daughter, who had a syndrome that was basically treated palliatively, and i was so in awe of the picu nurses. i wanted to do that too! (even though it was a few years before i realized it)
the best part is that now i am the picu nurse, although at a different facility, 8 years later, and one of our traveler nurses this season was one of the very picu nurses who so lovingly cared for my little girl and who had inspired me so! and i had the opportunity to tell her so! the lord works in mysterious and wonderful ways!

I went into nursing with some vague thought of helping people. However, I stayed in nursing because I love it.

I am in nursing school because I can think of no better way to positively impact people's lives while earning a decent living.
There are other ways to help people, and there are plenty of jobs that provide a decent living, but there are very few that do both.
Good luck in school!
