Have you ever had a patient that went above and beyond in thanking you or ar coworker for doing a great job? Does your workplace have a policy for when patients want to give back? For example, a fundraiser that can turn positive feelings from grateful patients into support for research, scholarships, new equipment, etc. Please provide your experience or tips for fundraiser, etc.

I have gotten candy bars. One time a family brought me a Filipino noodle dish (Poncit. ? spelling. It's one of my favorites). We had spoken about Filipino food while I was caring for their father. Such a nice family, very thankful and sweet. :)

When I worked in the nursing home setting, some families would give us $20 gift cards at Christmastime that were redeemable at local chain restaurants. Others would bring food or baked goods on holidays.

During Christmas 2010, the specialty hospital where I now work had a patient who lived hundreds of miles away in rural West Texas. Since she was so far from her husband and other relatives, she somewhat adopted us (nursing staff) on the holiday and bought us pizza and small Christmas gifts.

Working in a specialist office, we see the same pts on a very regular basis. I had one pt bring me a slice of Publix chocolate ganache supreme cake after lunch when I jokingly mentioned that I was craving chocolate; several pts brought me wedding gifts when I got married and left my previous employer; I got several cards during my pregnancy and one pt knitted a hat for my baby; one pt bought the nurses in my office tall teacups with lids that doubled as saucers; one pt worked for a potato chip company and would bring in bags of new chips they were trying for a taste test; one pt brought us all barbecue salads from a local BBQ restaurant at lunchtime; several bring home made treats around Christmas; a handful bring us fresh doughnuts from a nearby doughnut shop. Kids give us hugs and draw us pictures. :)
