Graduating in Florida but Moving to Mississippi

Published

I graduate from a Florida school and I plan to move to Mississippi. I want to have my license registered in Mississippi and I plan to work there. What would be the simplest way to do it, I can take the NCLEX in either place.

Do I need to file with the Florida BON and then transfer the license to Mississippi, or can I just take the test with Mississippi BON?

Would my school have to send all my files to the Mississippi BON then?

Since both states are compact am I able to apply for a compact state license in Florida and then just work in Mississippi?

You can apply to any state and your school will send paperwork to them. I would suggest applying to the state you plan on living and working in and save money

Which state you can apply to will depend on the state in you maintain legal residency. If you are a legal resident of either FL or MS, or any other compact state, you are going to have to apply for licensure in your state of residency, and this license should allow multi-state privileges. When you relocate from one compact state to another you are required to apply for licensure in your new state as soon as possible. After doing so you can work using your previous state's license while your application is being processed.

If you are not a legal resident of one of the compact states then you would be eligible to apply for initial licensure in MS. As you are not a legal resident of MS this license would be a single-state license only. When you establish legal residency in MS you would be able to apply for multi-state privileges.

Regardless of which state you apply to, your school will have to send your paperwork to that state's board of nursing.

Best wishes.

I am not currently living in MS but I will move there, I already have a house ready to move to, just not the "paperwork" that I live there but I would do it immediately once I move. Do you think I should just take it in Florida and then get it switched once I move to MS?

Which state are you a legal resident of? If you are a legal resident of any compact state, you can not apply for licensure in any of the other compact states. In your situation, if you are a legal resident of FL you have to apply for licensure in FL. When you relocate to MS you should apply for licensure by endorsement as soon as possible, and you will be allowed to work on your FL license while your MS license is being processed.

If your state if legal residence is a non-contact state then you can apply for licensure in MS.

ETA: For residency purposes, the Nurse Licensure Compact considers your state of legal residency. This might be seperate from the state that you physically live in.
